I have just been out in my car and upon my return noticed a strong smell of fuel when standing beside car. With the engine running there is a steady dribble of petrol coming from just in front of the fuel tank. (See attached image).

This stops when the engine is not running.

Anyone got any ideas?

The area where the drip is located looks like a protective cover, underneath which you will possibly find the fuel pump, fuel filter and various hose connections.

Take the cover off and the cause should be obvious.

I had a similar leak on my car which turned out to be a rusted fuel return pipe. I managed to fix it for about £15 with copper pipe and rubber fuel hose.

Good luck let us know how you get on. :)

Had another look today and noticed that it is a constant drip (about once every 2-3 seconds), then when the ignition it turned on and the fuel pump activates it's a steady trickle.

Haven't got the confidence/facilities to tackle this one myself, I'm going to the Merc specialist tomorrow morning so I'll see what the damage is. Hope it's not a new tank!

Merc man said that the plastic shrouding that covers the fuel pump gets full of muck etc off the road and the fuel pump was in contact with the muck, this has caused it to corrode and leak so I need a new one - cost £200 for Merc one or £150 for an OEM one - which is exactly the same and also made by Bosch.

Sorry, but that sounds like bull to me. Get him to show you the old pump and where it was leaking from(though he might just show you one off any old car!!) Its more likely to be a leaking pipe, maybe even a loose connection. A few £ at the most!!

In all my years in the trade(now ex, thank god!!)i have never heard of a fuel pump corroding so it actualy leaks!!

This just sounds very wrong to me.

Hi
I just had the same problem, it was the steel filter/pump bracket touching the ali body of the fuel pump, the corrosion is so bad there is now a pin hole in the fuel pump body- anyone know where I can get a peirburg pump for a C220 1996?

Thanks, I was able to get a new pump from a contact for £107, a lot less the the £240 that the dealer wanted
