High fuel consumption w212 e350 cdi estate

Drove to Basingstoke from Bognor. This includes cold start, cruise set at 70, 50mph areas on M27 and lightish traffic. To be honest I was hoping for a little better.
W212 CDI 350 PFL 231 horse version. Car drove faultless and i scanned whilst waiting in car....no codes. Not too bad I guess. Any views?

I would say it's about right in those conditions. What was the air temperature?

Averaged about 7c. But car warms up quickly and cooler denser air should help with efficiency. Can't imagine it would be that much different in the summer. I know people say that winter derv does not help....but to be honest my mpg was pretty constant all year round on my derv ALFA...and I never even knew winter derv was a thing in the UK until recently! I will see what I get on the way home..... and on my drive to Cornwall in three weeks time.

Im not sure but wasn't the OM642 updated at some point and the 264 hp version has lower emissions and better mpg than previous iterations ? I had the 224 hp version and had very similar fuel consumption figures to those you are getting.

I always found the trip computer read out very slow to update on fuel usage.

44.9 mpg with a slightly higher 49 mph average on the way back. Happy with that.

So as on board readouts usually overestimate that'll be about 37 in reality ☺️, which sounds about right compared to others 👍

My tank top to tank top measurements so far have all been within 1 mpg. My ALFA was the same. But petrol cars I've had were always pretty optimistic. ....but not had any that ever over read by 5 mpg though. So I'm happy that my near 42 and 45 mpg figures are pretty accurate... and so they should be...I was driving in such a way to get good mpg and rarely exceeded 70... driving like I normally do would certainly cost a few mpg! I was actually thinking those figures were a tad low on a car with a claimed combined of 41 and and extra urban or 50.4.... as 95 percent of the journey was multi lane roads and traffic was light. I can usually get close to factory figures on most cars with a little effort....but life is too short to drive like that all the time!! I'm sure I'll get better going to Cornwall (about 275 miles) in Feb.

You don’t get a V6 to drive like your Nan, if that’s the case, you might as well save a few quid and get a 220. 😁

I'd agree life is too short as long as the mpg is 'okay'
Doing that run, my E400 petrol will do 41 to 44 mpg (indicated) so the V6 diesel is only worth it for the torque it would seem

That said it's not 31 mpg where you would worry, so you're focusing on a quid or two if it got up to 45 / 48 mpg

If you do need good mpg, then an E250 or C250/300 4 pot is what you need
My boss in his 2017 C300 estate is seeing 60mpg on his runs across the New Forest
And it 'goes'......

But what do you get overall? I think they claim about 33....I I'm not that worried about mpg as I don't do loads of miles these days.....but they are so much cheaper than the E350 and up petrol models I couldn't say no. The creamy torque is a nice bonus (only 68 ft lb less than an E63.6.2 and at a fraction of the revs)....as is just 1650 rpm at 70 mph!
I drove a couple of four pot 212 models, and not wishing to offend owners but the 2.0l four pot derv on my ALFA was smoother and quieter except at stone cold..the Merc one was pretty agricultural....but probably a price worth paying if you do mega miles.

33 on a very good day without a long run. More in the 25 to 30 around town region

But back to the OP, it seems a V6 is a V6 is a V6.

Low to mid 40s on a run diesel (or petrol) unless under 55 mph is what has been quoted on here.

I didn't think the c300 is agricultural, but it is a diesel, there is no doubt

a petrol v6 tubo is not going to do anywhere near 40+ mpg in normal mixed driving (maybe on a very long run at slow speed), probably more like 30ish, which is ok if you don't do high miles, and a 2017 C300 will not do 60 mpg unless the gauge is reset while doing 55 mph with a tailwind - same for any car!

Re-checked mine now the weather is slightly milder and its increased to a whopping 37 mpg (mainly 70ish mph and country roads, maybe 10% town)

I'd concur.

My E400 will only do high 20s around town, (I didn't think I'd said 40 around town) but will then do those low 40s on cruise controlled 70 on the motorways.

I have had it at half of that on a 'fun run' though ;)

The c300d does regularly do 50 to 60 mpg and does do 60 or more on a boring run to Heathrow - yes benefitting from the top end 50 mph zones I concede. It's not mine though

My other car is a V8 and that indicated 39mpg on a steady run down from London last year.....

Main point here though is that a V6 diesel will be a great mile muncher but is still a thirsty V6, whatever flavour it drinks

whats the difference then? cos diesel is diesel lower freezing point than petrol
It isn’t the freezing point : diesel fuels contain a lot of wax like constituents which thicken in low temperatures and clog up injectors etc . We used to add petrol as far as a 50:50 mix in cold weather to combat this in my dad’s haulage fleet . Of course present day diesel cars with all their gizmos don’t like this .

Also remember petrol is a distilled spirit , whereas diesel is a heavy oil . Two entirely different things .
