Oh what a surprise, Mr Brown has decided to do away with the freeze on fuel duty and it therefore is increased by 1.25p effective tonight. What a lovely Christmas present from New Labour. Thats another 5p a gallon increase. I wish my wages had gone up in the last 6 years to pay for his increased spending.

Well you will also be pleased to note that class war now.literally, extends to air travel.

Fly to Costa del Plonka & back on ScumAir and you will now pay a total of £20Air Passenger Duty.

But go outside the EEA/Europe on anything other than the lowest class of travel and you will now pay £160

Although fuel duty is going up 1.25p per litre from midnight and air passenger duty from £5 to £10 for most flights, Mr Brown rejected demands to re-link petrol prices to inflation.

Cheers Gordy.

I'm sure that this rise in duty will have a significant and positive impact on the environment. It will lead to a dramatic reduction in road use, easing congestion, and reducing CO2 and pollutants introduced to the atmosphere.

I have no doubt that the proceeds and more will be spent on environmental initiatives to neutralise carbon emissions, and improve viable alternatives such as clean and efficient public transport, and research into green sources of propulsion.

Of course it will hit gas guzzling 4x4 owners hard, reducing their use, and ensuring that only those that genuinely need 4x4 SUVs 24x7x365 will use them.

At the same time it will have absolutely no impact on those on low incomes and depend upon their car (or SUV) because they live in rural areas, use it for business use, or for mobility due to disability.

It will also have no effect on hauliers and in no way further threaten businesses that are already on the edge of viability.

Well done.

Well at least you can still sign up at pipelinecard.org and wait (and wait, and wait ... :D) for that lovely 10p a litre discount on your fuel.

complete load of rubbish

More than 30 million drivers in the UK and all have votes, but just look at the choice -- what choice? A Chancellor of the Exchequer who doesn't hold a driving licence is but the tip of the pile of politicos who seem to live in a parallel universe. Where do we get these people from?

well its pretty obvious! they dont live in the real world. it wouldnt be such a bad thing if our wages increased in line inflation but the harsh reality is that it doesn't. some people such as myself need our cars in order to do our jobs so not only do i feel i am hard done by for driving my car to do my job, i also feel the bank of england has hard done me for increasing its base rate 3 times this year as i have a tracker mortgage. the prediction is that it will increase again in jan and if not so definately in feb 07. mark my words.

£200 of my family air fare total (5 of us) of £700 was tax!

Rip off Britain is such an accurate description.

All flights from the Scottish Highlands and Islands are exempt from duty.

Funny, that.

Sick of watching the govt p*ss away ever-increasing billions of taxpayers money.
And sick of being railroaded on this environmental stuff. Is the end of the world nigh, or what??

Very well said.

Remember to spend that weekend in Paris before jetting off to the States ;)

aha - reroute and add hours to your travel time to save on the tax!! Great way to start and finish a holiday/business trip!!
So the tax will increase flying hours, add to congestion at airports and place further strain on security services.
These great leaders of ours - they think of everything!!

Yeah, and they qualify for Euro grants too. still, due to the low wages, and work issues and education and health etc on the islands, I fully support that initative.

Plus I shall be in Oban once again on 18th Of Dec to giev them another going over. If this works out I am on my way to the land of male skirt wearing barbarians and philistines north of the border.:) Have shaved my legs on the strength of it already!

I hope they accept me unlike my local population of non indeginous englanders that rule my neck of the hearabouts.

Are they allowed to celebrate Christmas beyond north of Hadrians wall?

Regards the travel comments:

Isn't air travel more accessible for everyone now?
Aren't there a better selection of flights for you to use?
Aren't there flights to more destinations?
Travel is a choice last time I looked. You could always holiday here? ;-)
Doesn't the incredible worth of the pound offset some of this?

IMHO: All governments in countries like this will do things to annoy you, regardless of party. They have to make up for all of the mistakes before them, and the new ones that are made. Surely no one in their right mind thinks that it's headed anywhere other than south?

If the next government comes in and encourages 4x4 use, lowers the tax on fuel, holidays, fags, booze, etc - they'll make it up somewhere else. You'll all want to hate them for that too.

When was the last time the duty on fuel was increased? It used to be pretty much an annual thing - we've had a good run.

As Scott says, any government has to raise money from somewhere and the "victim" will always complain.

No matter how we look at it taxes on luxury goods are always going to be higher than those on essentials.

Come on that's not very nice! :p

Believe it or not Christmas decorations have been going up since the middle of November here in Glasgow!

Back to the subject, i had to laugh when i heard that the increase in airport tax or whatever it's called would be doubled to help the enviroment.

The 4x4 thing always gets to me, take for example a ML270 cdi is it not the same engine thats in a C270 cdi?

I cannot see that party getting back in......

Walking on Water

As far as duty exemption for the highlands and islands goes we have not yet developed the art of walking on water!
There are those among us who, having partaken of copious quantities of Uisge Beatha of a Saturday night may think they can, but sadly find this is not the case.;)

If you are still annoyed console yourself that the lowest price of 95 octane petrol (prebudget) in LERWICK in Shetland is 93.9ppl as opposed to the national average of 86.3ppl

......

So you are not celebrating the Winter Holiday then? Just you wait till i get my non offensive indoctrination going up there. I can have a field day cancellling everything from mince pies to snow ball fights and banning the wearing of kilts as it may be offensive to those gentlemen of a disposition to wear ladies clothing. Trust me, its coming.:D

And back on topic. Good old Gordy eh? Maybes its just me, but why does anybody think this man is either fit to be, or even should take over being prime minister? Surely a man who agrees to not fight for leader, so as a man who can win the election for Labour, and do so on more than 1 occasion, is not really a fighter! He is a follower! Can you imagine Mrs Thatch having agreed to that one?

Happy holidays everyone! Exept thsoe who may be offended by the fact I have declined to acknowledge the Christain festival surrounding the birth of Christ.

I think i may book myself into the rubber room for a few years! its quite obvious I have gone mad!
