GOLF MK4 Gear problem

UPDATE - just got a callfrom "Mr Clutch", they pulled the gearbox out and the clutch fell out in peices!, they couldnt see anything else wrong inside, so they replaced the clutch with a sachs one and put it all back together... problem fixed!!!

thanks for all the suggestions, luckily it was one of the cheaper solutions! £185 all in.
