Got a loan ML320CDI Sport today...

I am very drawn to the CLS. It looks great and I had one on demo a little while ago. It did feel like an really good E class to drive. But I've got one of those, abait in a its gardening clothes not a party frock......:)

looks like your views on the CLS has changed dramatically ...

I am almost sure you used to think it an ugly car.

Have you now been enlightened? :D

I think the CLS looks very nice, I think it has great lines

I've always thought it a very innovative?? design and quite radical for a marque like Mercedes-Benz. When I say I don't like it, what I should say is I would never buy one. To me it is neither butter nor margarine:devil:  :) . The lines are far to chopped for a comfortable saloon and my own view is that a coupe should be a nice two door sports or possibly executive type vehicle.

Brett is someone I hold in the highest of regard, he has owned numerous model Mercedes-Benz and knows what he wants. I respect that and feel slightly embarrassed voicing my own personal opinions on this thread. Respect to Brett and I know he always buys what he likes, and likes what he buys. (even the hearse:devil: :D joke)

Regards
John

it's all so much clearer now :D

have you been training to be a politician? :D

Well I have given it a lot of thought, and taken valued input from the likes of John, and completely ignored it. I've put a deposit down on a black/black 06/06 CLS320CDI. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that my current car has on it, but it is very, very nice and does have the important ones.

I have indeed owned a number of different Mercs, both coupe and cabriolet W208, the current steed a W209 CLK55 AMG cab, a W220 S320CDI and another W200 S320CDI Limo, and finally, the hearse - a W211 black E320 estate. So this will be my first foray into the CLS class of vehicle...what W number is it?

Its a W219.

I rather like it, I have an E class and think highly of the platform. The CLS builds on that a bit more.

I notice your in Scotland. Which dealer did it come from? Were they helpful etc?

Edinburgh - I know the guys pretty well - they've sold me quite a number of cars over the years. They were very helpful, and dare I say it, creative when it came to securing my business.

Eastern Mercedes?

I nearly bought a car from there, but the salesman wasn't receptive to me wanting book value for a PX.

Good to hear they worked out well for you.

Western MB in Edinburgh, part of the Eastern Western Group. They started under book on mine too but we did a bit of hard bargaining and go there in the end. The alternative was my wife's preference for another RAV4 - I just couldn't go there. We test drove an X3 with the twin turbo diesel engine in it and whilst the performance was superb, neither of us liked the car. I suspect when it comes time to swap the Touran, that is what we'll get for her.

What about the new VW Tiguan? Nice small off roader based on the MKV Golf....

My Mum has a 3rd rav 4 and its very good I have to say. The interior materials azre okay, but not as good as a German cars but mechanically its been faultless bar a crap battery.

I had an X5 and the difference in price between it and the X3 were minimal but in qaulity etc massive. I wouldn't go down the X3 route personally....

The main reason for looking at the X3 was the missus not being happy about the size of the ML. So I said that if we were going to replace the CLK with something that I wasn't that keen on, I'd want to make sure it had some redeeming qualities e.g. fast and fun. Thankfully, she reached the conclusion that the X3 was not the right car for us. Too many compromises.

She'd run a RAV for four years before the Touran and really misses it. When the time comes to replace her car, we'll definitely look at the Tiguan, as well as the CRV etc. I quite like the look of the VW and our Touran has cost buttons to run, so if it is similar, it could be a winner.

I'm down south on business until late Friday night but my missus and wee boy pick up our new CLS tomorrow. Neither are particularly happy at losing "Lightning McQueen" but they'll cope. We're away to the Isle of Arran in it over the weekend, so photos may follow.

With fuel and taxation going the way they are I think it's a matter of short time before we see diesel CL, SL, SLK and CLK (cab) hitting the market. I seem to only see two types of CLS - AMGs (parked next to a 63 a few days ago) and 320CDIs. BMW make a diesel 6 series, where's the CL320 / SL320 CDi?

Funny you should say that, the used car manager that I spoke to loves CL's but won't stock them as they are too hard to move on! Anyway, I am still in deep doggy doo doos with my wee boy. The missus picked up the car today but the wee boy was not best pleased. Hey ho, disappointment can be so crushing in one so young.

 :) I never said a word to him! :)

Hopefully he will very quickly come round and get to like your new wheels.

Happy motoring

John

Why doesn't he like your new car? I don't have little ones, but when I got rid of the V8 X5 for my E class I could tell my friends didn't rate the car nearly as highly (it wasn't "cool" for a 23 year old) but as someone said to me "its you that has to drive it/live with it so if you lie it then you have done the right thing".

My wee boy is four and a half and has been obsessed by Lightning McQueen from the Cars Movie for the past 18 months or so. He's always considered the CLK as his very own Lighning McQueen. He thought the CLS was "super cool" as an overnight loan car, but not necessarily as a long term option. As I said previously, disappointment can be so crushing in one so young!
