As per the title - would like some recommendations from real users please!
And it is always good advice on here!

Are we talking portable sat nav's TomTom, Garmin etc.. or hand held sat navs for hiking trekking walking etc?

Portable for use in the car.

I use a sat nav every day for my job,I started off with the tom tom one which I thought was superb ,very easy to use and very reliable but I needed it to cover the channel islands as we were going on holiday there. So i bought a garmin nuvi 760 although very good and has a lot more features than the tom tom I prefer the tom tom for the way it updates your route quickly if you take a wrong turn, tha garmin will let you drive for quite a while before it will change.

What is that based on please Gordon?

Personal experience over the years! Tried most major makes over the years and keep coming back to Garmin. Navman kept rebooting - support unable to fix; TomTom support was just abysmal when I had a problem - they just gave up! My present Garmin Nuvi 770 is just brilliant and is coming with me on my RTW trip, starting tonight! I'll report back on how well it worked in NZ in about 6 weeks time!:D

TomTom6 mobile on my N95 using the internal GPS means you only carry one device.

Works like a charm, used it in California and Nevada too

I agree with that too I also run TT6 on my Palm Treo Pro. Only drawback is if you are trying to navigate complex roads in major capital cities then the small size of the screen becomes a problem, fine otherwise though.

Another vote for the N95 (or similar). On a recommendation here, I find the stock N95 works nicely with Google Maps.

For automotive use I would not hesitate to buy Garmin over TT, Navigon etc.
