Mercedes C Class C250 cdi blue efficiency 2011
My car as had a strange squeak now and then from rear nearside wheel, I thought it may have been the dust shield catching, so stopped a couple of times over the last week and pushed shield with screw driver and it stopped until today when it got a bit worse. I took wheel calliper and disc off to inspect more closely but as I was trying to get the disc off bits of spring were falling on the ground? and the shoes were fitting loosely, so now I know what was causing the noise, I have removed the shoes and rest of springs and adjuster and are about to order a new set DIY job, in the mean time would it still be safe to drive the car to work and back till parts arrive and I can get the job done!

Driving the car with bits of parking brake rattling about is not a good idear. You would be in danger of causing more damage.

Thanks, I have found a kit I am going to get Mercedes as well and just look the springs have the bend in them

Well it will most probably be OK to drive then. May not be street legal, but your choice.
Just been looking and can drive as long as no moving parts to interfere with anything

Thought I would take the handbrake adjust arm of the car and disconnect the brake cable: what a job it was seized solid, spent an hour trying to free it with WD40 and got everything free but still could not get the little pin out to disconnect from the handbrake cable, try again tomorrow after overnight soak. The only thing that's not corroded is the wheel hub, springs, shoes, adjusters, discs OK but not great so changing everything both sides when it comes, I wondered why I had to try adjust handbrake a couple of times since having the car. It seems everything else is well made by Mercedes except the handbrake set up and shield. The 2 springs retaining the shoes to the shield and come adrift because the shield was rotten. I am I right in thinking the shields can be put in place without the need to remove hub, and by cutting through them!!!

Update, everything off drivers side and things were working fine and that little pin just slipped out easy, other side still to get out may have to put some heat on it. Apart from that just waiting for all new parts to arrive and then fit

Be carefull cutting the back plates, lots of youtube stuff out there to help you.

Thanks had a look on you tube before I started and got them off really easy, and on how to put new ones on again

Found plates really easy to fit only cut a small section, all sorted now rear brake system all re-newed

I have no idea how this is the first time I have seen this thread , I have been on here everyday for weeks ? This happens sometimes , Algorithms ?

Very Recently you will see a fair few posts (with photos) from me discussing this other forum members. Have a search

Curious as to which cut you used to get the backplate on without removing the hub . Unless yours are different to a 203 C class there is basically nothing that can be removed without leaving the brake shoes without the raised plinth on the backplate that they need to rest on . I did mine with a single slit cut and a bit of a bend over the hub. Taking any metal off the plate would have left them un usable. Do you have any photos ?

After cutting I undercoated and re sprayed the bare edge and sealed with butyl.

I’ve used the ‘slit and bend’ method successfully on a few occasions. Cutting out a section looked like it would remove necessary material, certainly on a 203 and Vito.

I cut my shields in one place, the small cut in your photo, no need to cut the larger side, and mine went on easy, spread apart and put over hub in a spiral movement and turn until you see there is only a about 3 /4 ml shower behind flange for bolts on hub, then bend over, once over just bend back fits really snug.
