Has Anyone Ever Seen The Holy Grail?

Unit504's thread about buying an E55 or C55 got me thinking about the specifications of Mercedes...

We hear it all the time 'absolutely every extra', 'top spec' etc etc in car adverts, yet it doesn't take eagle-eyes to spot some holes in their descriptions.

I know that you can't have every single extra because some are contradictory; Bose or HK sound for example.

So has anyone had a Mercedes with 'every possible extra' or what's the nearest you've seen.

I think I came close whilst living in germany,I bought a 87 560 seL in Diamond blue. I purchased it from a main MB dealer who said it was pretty much a 'one off' as far as the speck went. apart from 'the norm' leather electric seats (heated) the rear seats were heated and reclined (bench seats)fire extiguisher,it even had sump and coolant heater, you set the time on the computer you wanted to use the car,it would then heat the oil and coolant, you were then ok to give it some welley down the Autobahn.dual climate control, sunroof, dual memory seats. In fact, the previous owner had stated to the dealer that if mercedes made it,he wanted it fitting, apparently it was somthing to do with writing it off on his tax.It was three years old when I purchased it, with 60000 km, I put a further 70000 on it over about three years. I never had any trouble with it at all. The thing I remember most was the air cleaner pan on top of the engine,it was huge, more like an engine cover.i think it was chauffeur driven as if the battery was low the first thing that shut down was the drivers seat heating.

You can never have every extra but the wifes SLK 200 comes fairly close. Auto, Comand, phone prep, HK sound, xenons, remote roof, full climate control, interior light package, folding mirrors, leather, dual electric memory seats, heated seats, airscarf, ipod connection, 17 alloys, heated steering wheel. No metallic paint - its Fire Opal. When we ordered it in 2005 they really tried to put us off having this spec and colour. Yes it cost a lot but we keep our cars a long time so on that basis its not too bad.

I bought a Z3 in 2001 and imported it from Germany.

At the time I added £6500 worth of options, I really don't think in that model there was anything I missed. At the end of the days its a 2 seater sports car !!!

Not sure on Mercs as some options cancel others out.

Being German did it have the very rare multifunction computer display on the instrument cluster?:p If not = fail!;)

I like to think mine comes close with £16K's worth of options, however it is missing such things as electric extending loadspace floor and cooled seats, plus others I'm sure - the W211 option list is very long.

I've not seen another better equipped E320 CDI yet though.

Brabus D6 III chip giving 272bhp/590Nm - Brabus badging, engine covers, door buttons, all dealer fitted at PDI - Factory fitted AMG bodykit - Keyless go - Airmatic air suspension - COMAND 2.5 - Harman Kardon - 4 zone Thermotronic - Linguatronic - Distronic - Parktronic - Memory seats - Heated seats - Tyre pressure monitoring - Infra red glass - Blinds (it's got blackout glass??) - Auto tailgate - Garage door opener - Tracker - Fire Extinguisher

here's a piccy :thumb:

I owned a 1990 560SEC which had every option bar the trip computer, (which I'm not entirely sure was a UK option).

Heated seats, rear blind, town and country horn, sunroof, leather, roll tops centre console, ABS, ASR.

Oh it didn't have luxury climate - it had standard Air - I think that was the only non selected option.

Hi,to be honest,I am not sure, the photograph did not bring back any memories (long time ago) what I do remember that you could recall max speed, temp, fuel consumption, etc,so a definite maybe.I have some photographs somewhere, proper photographs on paper:)perhaps it will show up on there,I also have (somewhere)the insurance certificate,it may have the vin number.
I think I am correct in that at the time, the 560 had the fastest 50mph to 70mph of any other vehicle.I have had over 60 cars in my time. The 560SEL was one of the best I have owned. Buying a German car (in Germany)was far removed from doing the same in the UK. The cars in Germany were a lot cheaper, however, they had none of what you expect today, even the radio was extra,by the time you brought it upto a descent spec the price could almost double. You have aroused my interest,I will take my life in my hands and enter'The loft'. Woody

Dam blast and set fire to it, I did NOT have a rear blind.:( I remember the two horns though, contoled via two switches, one with a large horn, the other with a small one.

The CL600 on display at MB World, first owned by the Sultan of Brunei, seems rather well equipped ;)

I know that my w211 E500 is very highly spec'd and didn't think that it was missing anything when i bought it. However, I have since seen W211's with electric boot lid, rear TV and heated rear seats, however what I don't know is whether these were available to order when my car was built. I doubt the TV was available, but not sure about the other options.

My 450sl has a footswitch next to the brake pedal. Nobody knows wtf its for , so must be fully loaded ;) ( and John Cleese comes from weston-super-mare , so i have been close to the holy grail ).

Hi,at one time all cars had a footswitch, some had two, one to dip the headlights, the other was a pump, worked the windscreen washer.Showing my age again.Might not be this but thought I would mention it.
ANY OTHER OLD FOLKS OUT THERE REMEMBER??

That footswitch should work the windscreen washers and single wipe function iirc.

Bearing in mind the year on year innovations I think there is possibly no such thing as "the Holy Grail". What are standard fit now were options only a few years ago. Having said that perhaps an original Model T Ford fits the bill!

I suppose my point is to try and find the best spec car anyone's ever come across at that time, like you with your 560.

Now come on Lee , its gone 8.00 , get off your backside and get that bloody van cleaned up.

Sorry boss, I'm feeling a bit delicate after a night on the Grey Goose, so I might have to pass on that....
