Has Anyone Ever Seen The Holy Grail?

Hi,at one time all cars had a footswitch, some had two, one to dip the headlights, the other was a pump, worked the windscreen washer.Showing my age again.Might not be this but thought I would mention it.
ANY OTHER OLD FOLKS OUT THERE REMEMBER??

Yup, I remember them. IMO better than the present system. At least, with an auto, it gave your left foot something to do. :)

Bearing in mind the year on year innovations I think there is possibly no such thing as "the Holy Grail". What are standard fit now were options only a few years ago. Having said that perhaps an original Model T Ford fits the bill!

As illustrated by the fact that my entry-level 1999 A-Class had just about all the stuff that Red_C220's lists for his range-topping 560SEC just nine years earlier (apart from the rear blind, twin horns and a roll-top for the centre console).

I had a foot operated dipswitch on my first car, I can remeber lying on my back underneath the dash replacing it as well, I was more agile in those days :D

Unit504's thread about buying an E55 or C55 got me thinking about the specifications of Mercedes...

We hear it all the time 'absolutely every extra', 'top spec' etc etc in car adverts, yet it doesn't take eagle-eyes to spot some holes in their descriptions.

I know that you can't have every single extra because some are contradictory; Bose or HK sound for example.

So has anyone had a Mercedes with 'every possible extra' or what's the nearest you've seen.

My old C55 had every possible Merc factory extra on it - linguatronic, rear blind, tyre pressure monitor, fire extinguisher, rear side airbags, BEM, HK, luxury climate, Comand, parktronic, parameter steering etc. Not seen one with all of that on it again, but most are well-equipped and advertised as 'fully loaded' or something to that effect...

When I was looking for my first E-Class 4 year ago, I came across a 2003 E220 CDI Avantgarde that had; heated/cooled seats, memory seats driver & passenger, dynamic seats, parking sensors, comand/tv, rear heated seats, full amg kit, rear blinds, that's all I can remember. I'm sure it had a 10 CD Changer but I didn't think they did them on that year.

My friends 2004 639 Vito 115 has every optional extra, although the list isn't too exhaustive on those.

I would love to see how much a new W212 350 CDi would cost if you ticked every option.

Sadly yes:doh:

my s600 has only one thing missing, which seems standard on most s600 and that is the rear climate control. It doesnt have the twin seats also and ski rack but it cant because the fridge is there.
Apart from that when i look at the parkers guide is everything ticked.
orginal bill is for £112,995

But you can have the designo i think which is more exclusive than the exclusive leather package i suppose.

I like to think mine comes close with £16K's worth of options, however it is missing such things as electric extending loadspace floor and cooled seats, plus others I'm sure - the W211 option list is very long.

I've not seen another better equipped E320 CDI yet though.

Brabus D6 III chip giving 272bhp/590Nm - Brabus badging, engine covers, door buttons, all dealer fitted at PDI - Factory fitted AMG bodykit - Keyless go - Airmatic air suspension - COMAND 2.5 - Harman Kardon - 4 zone Thermotronic - Linguatronic - Distronic - Parktronic - Memory seats - Heated seats - Tyre pressure monitoring - Infra red glass - Blinds (it's got blackout glass??) - Auto tailgate - Garage door opener - Tracker - Fire Extinguisher

I am really going to enjoy that lot aren't I ;):D

When I find a D6(S) S212, though it won't be anytime soon I'm afraid Steve.

Do you old timers remember cars that had the tear-drop indicator switch in the middle of the dash. I remember them as a kid, because as a kid it was my job to operate it. But no idea what car. You had to twist to the left or right depending which side you wanted to operate, and then move it back to cancel.

The next first car I remember that had what we now consider normal, a stalk self cancelling indicator on the column. Now that was luxury and compared to what we now take for granted, it was pure magic.

I'm only 39, but my first car was a 1978 Ford Fiesta, which had a floor-mounted footpump to operate the windscreen washers. Not a footswitch for a pump - it was the pump, a little plastic bellows. Brilliant bit of design, as you could choose how fiercely to squirt depending on road speed and which bit of windscreen you wanted to clean.

That car definitely didn't fall into the "fully loaded" category. It had front head rests, but that was about it.

I believe the only two options my car is missing is Parking sensors which I’m not to bothered about, don't like holes in my bumper anyway. :p

And electric rear blinds ohh ohh and fire extinguisher...

Otherwise it has everything else from lingutronic to Command, heated seats, Parameter steering, luxury climate control, H/K sound system etc, etc... :D

I remember them well, if you did not turn them off they would continue to flash. Our first car(when I was a lad) had the old style indicators that did not flash and were just a small illuminated hand that dropped down out of the a frame. If you were lucky it went back again. A rear screen heater was an extra,we used an after market affair that was like a small electric fire that was held in place with two rubber suction pads. The only trouble was the heat dried out the suction pads and the heater dropped off, what would elf and safety have to say.:)
