Common problem in these cars I believe, but the heated drivers seat in my SL does not heat up the seat pad, only the back.

I believe the heater element will be knackered and it is in the seat pad (which I presume means the leather you sit on).

If so what is the likely cost of replacement including labour or can I do it myself if I buy the part?

It wouldn't bother me, but the drivers seat pad is also a bit 'sat on' looking (there's a surprise seeing as it's sat on :D) so it would kind of kill two birds with one stone.

OK I have looked into this and it seems changing the seat leather is actually a relatively simple job so I will do it myself.

Can anyone confirm that the heater element is in the leather and not a separate item as even MB Manchester seem unsure?

Im not sure about your SL , but on a 212 the heating element is separate from the leather cover . I fitted a replacement cover last year .The car had heated seats and I had to remove foam filling strips from the new cover and slide in the heating element .
