I'm a long time W126 fan. First W126 I drove was a 500SEL back in 1985, I bought that same car 5 years later. Where to go after a 500? Had to be the 560!

When I bought my 560SEL in the early 90s I mused 'what could possibly replace it?' 20 years later, the answer's still the same: nothing!

I reckon the W126 is the apogee of Benz, indeed the apogee of motoring excellence. The best car in the world!

Hello
Welcome to the Forum :thumb:

If I were picky :o as present day transport I would highlight the lack of side impact protection and their tendency to rust possibly due to their use of HSLA high strength low alloy steel in the floor and chassis members-----magnificent cars all the same. :thumb: What would a modern V8 diesel engined car been like? The most powerful diesel was a 3 litre turbocharged straight six for the US market at 143bhp 175ft/lbs @2,400:( Not sure if any diesel engined versions were available in the UK??

I hear you, re 'picky'. :)

But to be honest I ain't interested in the added weight of side impact protection etc.. As for the tin worm, mine's 'showing some petticoat' these days but I've collected the panels and she'll shine again before long.

I hate the electronic infestations and interference of W140-onward Benzes. A loaded W126 has all the important toys, with hardware switches/relays/motors, stuff that can be repaired (if ever it ever fails that is!).

The most important thing with these cars is to use them. I'm up to 285K miles now, and doing about 18K a year at the moment. Recently I've driven younger, lower mileage W126s and been surprised how they've deteriorated through lack of use - squeaks, fading woodwork, dried out leather and so on.

Hello and welcome:thumb:

I have to agree with you on issues with little used 126's. Mines done only 67.000 miles and has a few creaks and rattles from the interior. But I'l have it spot on in no time at all.

Love those wheels:thumb:
