Car
1983 380SL & 1998 CLK230 Kompressor.
I went out ot the car this morning ( (98, 230 kompressor) and it fired up straight away. i left it running while i scraped the ice off the windows, then switched off and went to get the kids ready for the school run. I came back to the car about 15 mins later and it wont turn over.
The ignition lights all come on and i can hear the fuel pump priming but it wont crank over at all. I tried running through the gears and back into park but to no avail. I turned the headlights on and tried to crank it again and the lights didnt dim at all, which suggest to me that the battery is ok.
Can anyone help please ?
Thanks.

Check all the fuses first.

Also check the hidden fuses under the black panel on the left of engine bay. You have to remoce philips screws.

Great ok, ive checked the ones under the pull off cover and in the boot, didnt realise there was more !!!
thanks, il check now.:thumb:

Possibly the gear box inhibitor switch? If not a problem with the immobiliser circuits/relay and final possibility the starter motor solenoid may have given up the ghost.

Have you tried jump starting it? My mrs did exactly the same with her clk 200 last month... Drove to the doctors, came out 10mins later and it wouldnt start... it was a flat battery!

And her radio and lights worked fine, it just wouldn't turn over... Jumped it and it started straight away. It wouldn't start without jumping it after that so I got a new battery from ecp using our discount for around £40 and it was fine after that!

I haven't tried jumping it yet, my wife will be home from work shortly so i'l try jumping it from her SL. Cheers for all the suggestions guys.

DON'T Jump start it. You may cause electrical damage to both cars.

Do you have brake down cover?

My brother has his own garage business and has just been and put his Snap on diagnostic checker on it and its showing fault code 116- oil temp sensor start lock out.
Would that be engine oil or gearbox oil ? i suppose it could be likely that a sensor has failed and to prevent any damage it wont allow the car to start. Any thoughts or experience with these please guys ?
Thanks.

hmmmm I guess im lucky then, though I have jump started my slk, the cl and clk without any problems before though! touch wood!! maybe you could swap the battery from your SL and see if that works?

The AA came out to the car and got it started by running a feed straight to the starter. I drove it to my brothers garage and left it with him. The fault was in the fusebox (as you look into the engine bay from the front of the car, its the one at the back right hand side) he took the fusebox apart and inside there was a break in the printed circuit board. He carefully bridged the break with solder and the faults cured.
Hopefully there isnt an underlying problem which caused the break in the first place and it may have just been a weak spot, but so far so good its been perfect.
Cheers for all the advice though chaps.
