As TV said the bag will get sucked in, then it even more troublesome. You have to dismantle the tank to dislodge the plastic bag.

I used to put cotton wool balls into tanks, the balls get sucked onto the pipe and the engine stops, then the balls just float away and the engine starts, then the ball gets suck over the pipe again and so it goes on:mad:

Malcolm, you're a genius

The lid off an old jar of gravy granules fits just fine. Very slightly loose but I don't see it coming off and it only has to last till Monday.

Brilliant thanks

Just to close this one out, I went back to Asda last night and they had my cap behind the desk :D

Thanks again everyone for all the help.

i guess this is done but next time never ever use plastic bags with petrol or diesel cuz they tend to melt it depending on the composition which is not good if the residue leaks into the tanks

Related, slightly,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Something that has came up for years and still comes up in conversations / postings.

"If I run my car to a very low fuel level, it will suck up all the crap from the petrol / diesel tank"

Does anyone agree on this ? .............. ( I Don't)

With the cars that we run there has never been a thread on crap in tank caused car to stop, well not to my knowledge

Depends on how much crap you have in the tank doesn't it ;)

Get enough of it drawn into the pump and clog up the filter then its going to make the engine really unhappy and if it's bad enough stop it.

The picture that dieselman put up of his filter was bad, that was a diesel

The point I was trying to make was, no matter how low a level your fuel gets to in the tank, the lift pipe is still taking it from the bottom of the tank. Hence, no difference.

Fair enough
