Well, perhaps parts of it are??
We had a mk7 Golf R stolen around 4 months ago.
I recently happened upon a listing on eBay with the same specification of car being broken for parts.

The seller's previous history shows doors from both sides of car, rear bumper and bonnet (amongst various other parts) all in immaculate condition.... so why has this car been broken for parts??

I enquired to see if the tailgate was still available (hoping it may have a dealer sticker on it) unfortunately its sold (no pic available on 'completed listings').

The seller still has the speedo 'clocks' for sale. Does anyone know if this would be identifiable as being from our car?

I contacted local VW parts dept and the guy there said only engine and chassis (which aren't available) are identifiable

I phoned the Police about my suspicions but they say they won't act without some proof.
many thanks

Some manufacturers instr clusters are coded to the ECU which in turn is coded to the keys, it might be possible if read that the cluster could reveal the ECU......hence the Keys......check with a VW forum first, very discretely!

Might be worth double checking but I think the airbag ecu on VW also contains the secondary speedo reading and VIN number to prevent clocking.

Ask the seller if he has the airbag ecu although if he does this regular I suspect he knows which parts not to sell.

Dealer would know for sure what's stored on there and all cars have secondary speedo readings and vin number stored on at least one other ecu in the car if you could get this it would be proof

how about the dash top with the chassis number rivited to it as seen through the windscreen?

Thanks the steering wheels is already sold (completed listings)

I think airbag ecu is a separate unit not in the steering wheel but under the dash front right under drivers leg.

I'll make some calls tomorrow to find out where secondary info is located

Drivers handbook chassis codes are inside cover on a white lable, also under the carpet boot floor on a sticker.

If he took the car in to break for parts surely there is a V5 you can view?

He says only, gear knob, clocks, rear bumper and exhaust and few other bits remaining
I think he seems suspicious of me and has told me to ring him (I'm not keen on doing that!)
Even if it's now my wife's old car, I would say it was probably someone's car that was stolen!

If the police aren't bothered about chasing this up, I wouldn't bother wasting my time.

From his abrupt, poorly constructed messages I think if I asked for proof of this he may tell me to 'do one'!

Someone on here recently had their E55K stolen and subsequently found the parts for sale on eBay (I presume by recognising particular marks on them or something).

Setup a purchase and got the rozzers involved.

Was successful I believe.

Quite , however his insurer , who presumably paid out on the stolen car , may take a little more interest .

It would do no harm to phone them and voice suspicions .

Also , it depends somewhat who the OP spoke to re the police - if just a civilian operator on the desk they may not care less ; but most forces have a dedicated car crime unit who may well appreciate the intelligence .

I wouldn't have any further contact with the seller though .

You could call the seller - just buy a mobile sim from anywhere and put £10 credit on it cash - untraceable.
