Hi guyz! I have been asking loads of questions over the past few weeks about changing glow plugs, as you may recall, well..... I went to change them, and number 2 has snapped on me!!! The thread is out, but the rest of it is stuck in there, what can I do? The needle is still sticking out which was running through the glow plug, all i need to do now is extract it, whats my best method? Can I drive the car?

Thanx

I wouldn't drive it. Although if you start the engine now, chances are it will fire out at extremely high speed, enabling you to insert a new one :)

You could also consider drilling it out, but best leave it to the experts really.

How did you snap it?

For a laugh, you could try reverse drilling it out - they sell (in woolworths of all places) - reverse drill bits - for removing rounded off screws - its just a backwards drill end - stuff into the end of the glow plug, and attempt to get it out - but I'd try to go IN first a bit - lots of WD40, then try to ease it out - more WD40...

Do not reverse drill it unless you are extremely experienced as the rest of the glow plug will fall into the engine and you will need to pull the head off to fix.

Oh dear, I feel for you mate. This sounds like its going to be a tad on the exbenzive side, unless you know a GOOD indi. Just during the festive season too.

Snapped glowplug

Don't want to seem unsympathetic but you were warned!

The procedure now is to take it to an expert and hand over lots of cash so he can remove the head, drill out the broken bit of glowplug and, probably, helicoil the head so a new glowplug can be fitted

South African build quality niggles. Check paint very carefully for starring, particularly solid colours. Consumers Association members have reported minor rattles and electrical faults. Six speed manual gearbox has sometimes given trouble on other MB models fitted with it. Go through the exact spec with a fine tooth comb as imports and now even UK sourced cars may not have the spec you are expecting. Has also been one report of accelerated suspension bush wear problems due to the dire state of Britain's road and its unique traffic calming/harming measures. All W203 C-class to April 2002 (saloons and estates) were manufactured without door / seam sealant. Since August 2002 C-Class models, produced in Bremen, were completely sealed on all panels. People with these cars need to inspect the seam on the bootlid and round the bottom of the doors. Despit the fact that they are rusting from the inside out it is NOT classed as perforation and ONLY repaired. VITAL TO CHECK GLOW PLUGS OF DIESELS. These have a habit of failing, then break when the garage tries to remove them and rectification can cost £4,500

Its the going rate to have them changed. B*tch of a job to do, especially number 6.

You've probably done the job now but there will still be some thread left in the hole.
Using a tubular drill guide drill the old thread out 1mm smaller than the outside thread diameter, then pickig up the start of the thread run a tap down the thread. This will have destroyed the plug thread so the plug can then be withdrawn.

An Ezi-out MAY do the job but be very careful to do it by hand and go slowly.

Aaagh!!! Same prob here, got the Beru plugs from GSF, soaked them all in situ with WD and then warmed motor a bit, more WD and nice and easy on the socket.... 1, 2 and 4 no probs, 5 was a bitch to get at, and 3 just snapped directly below the 10mm hex, leaving the outer sleeve and all of the thread in situ.... Thread is pretty flush with head, done a LDF (Leak Detection Fluid) test whilst running, and it's not passing anything..... So safe to drive, but how the hell am I gonna get it out??????
