Hello everybody!

Had many cars over the years and now a Mercedes owner (sadly she's an old gal) C200 and prev owner abused her. Trying to keep her going, hope I can get some help on here to do that and hope this is the first of many Mercs I'm to own

CURRENT ISSUE:-

Not sure if i should be asking here or on the appr forum page?, anyway:
Appreciate your help please.

She (the C200) failed the MOT last week 2 items (so not too bad) both connect to the parking brake :

-'Efficiency below requirements"
-"Rear parking brake recording little or no effort offside"
So basically rear OS parking brake problem

Have looked at under seat and OS cable does look somewhat stretched IE further up than the other (NS)

Also took wheel off and disc and although I sprayed what appeared to be the linkage on RHS of where parking brake 'shoes' were (obv avoiding pad areas), after removing main brake pads, did seem to be moving in and out, but still no good.

Basically with adjuster adjusted to just biting so wheel just turns when light biting (when disc back on) press parking brake (foot type) and when full on, wheel still moves

Any ideas pls ? Especially on where I can find how to maybe replace cable and remove and try and remedy parking brake mechanism at wheel hub?

There's a pivot pin where the cable clevis attaches to the operating mechanism inside the hub. This pin can seize and the mech then twists rather than 'opens up' as it's designed to do. Take the disc/drum off and with someone operating the pedal you should be able to see if this is the case.

Parking brake prob

Thanks

Couldn't really see/get to the mechanism to locate this pin.
Am I best to take off the parking brake shoes first? First impressions are these are a pain to remove?

Mr Merc yes your right a bit of a pain to replace .If its all free and not seized up , but you can adjust them with a screewdriver after the disc is replaced back .Small hole to work through.Me i would remove the shoes and pull on the cable to see if its pulling up the linkage inside the back plate .If not then it seized up .If not then adjustment on the cable is needed ,then if that wont work your cable as stretched

Thanks

Try the operation with the drum off before going any further. You should see the shoes expanding when the brake is operated...then...

First impressions are correct if you don't have the correct tools...however:

This is an 8mm x 70mm bolt with a double hacksaw cut into the end.

With the disc/drum off poke this through the larger hole in the hub flange and engage the slot in the cross part of the retaining spring. Push in and turn 90deg either way. This releases the holding-in spring which can be withdrawn. There's one on each shoe.
Then, if you don't have a brake spring hook, pass a length of strong twine round the lower end of the longer return spring and pull down sufficient to allow the spring to come out it's slot. The two shoes can now be wangled out of the hub. You will now see the mech whereby the cable attaches to the operating lever. This mech has to be swivelled open to reveal the pin which is normally retained in place by said mech and you will instantly be able to tell if it is seized or not.

If the cable is stretched and needs replacing you will have to do this anyways so instructions not wasted. :D

This is the adjustment procedure for an S211. I'm not saying it's perfect but it works for me.
