Hi there, just signed up and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm James and I'm from Essex.

I'm looking into getting a merc clc , preferably in silver and with the pana roof. I'm not too sure whether or not to get a petrol or diesel and would be interested to here peoples view on both versions of the 180 and 200 etc engines. Things like fuel consumption, is there much difference between the two?

Also, I have looked at a few available for my budget. These were both 56 plates with around 50k miles. I'd be interested to know what sort of work needs doing to these at this point in their life. Ie cam belt change etc...

Thanks for taking the time to view my thread and I look forward to your help.

Cheers

James

Hi James
Welcome to the forum

Welcome!

If you are looking for a 56 plate, then they were called the C-class coupe back then!
From 2004 on, the C-coupe was facelifted, which is recommended. A 56 plate should be good.
The 'CLC' has been around for approx 2 yrs.

My advice would be to go for the bigger engine of whichever fuelling you choose, as it is harder to improve performance at a later date if you want to. Just sticking a filter or exhaust on will not make much difference.
The diesels have Brabus chip upgrades available, but the petrols do not.

Really the choice of fuel is personal & upto you.
However I always understood that you needed to be doing approx 20-25k miles to make a diesel worthwhile financially once cost of car, extra cost of diesel & servicing has been factored in.

There is just a timing chain on the petrols, so no cam belt change required.
There really should not be much needed at this age apart from routine servicing.
Check with your local dealer re services- usually you would alternate between an 'A' & a 'B' service. A is approx £300, B £400 plus parts. Your car will be out of warranty unless bought from a main dealer, so you could use an indepent service agent.

Pano roof is a good choice, as is the sports kit & leather seats. If you get leather seats, then they must also be heated!:D

Good luck!

Hello James and welcome to the forum. I have a 180 CLC auto in silver and love it. I find it plenty powerful enough for me, in fact it is quicker than my previous car a BMW 320i with a 2.2 litre engine.

Regarding economy, I went for a petrol due to the fact that my annual mileage is only about 7000 miles and has been previously mentioned you really need to cover 20000 plus miles a year to notice a benefit. I recently returned from a two week holiday in France and returned 35.5 mpg over 1400 miles, which wasn't great, but I hope will improve once the car is fully run-in.

Should you require any further info re the CLC, please ask away. :thumb:

Hi James I have a C22O diesel coupe it returns aprox 45 mpg running to and from work
all 30 and 40 mph and mid 50's on a motorway run plus I like the torque of the diesel although the engine is noisey at low speed. Welcome to the forum

My c230k gives approx 32 mpg on normal short runs (10miles) with out hanging about. The c200k should give a little better than that.
On lazy long m-way cruises, I can get 45mpg.
Mine is a manual; the autos give lesser economy plus a slower sprint

Hey welcome

Thank you all for the kind welcome.

Smatt, Killwilly, again, thank you for the advice. I have just purchased a 200K with 56,000 on the clock. Auto, leather seats, pana roof. It's lovely. Runs really well and I'm very pleased with it.

I'd like to nip any potential problems in the bud before they manifest themselves into something worse. What sort of things would be good to check given the mileage of the vehicle? When are the services due?

Thanks again for the help
