Hi everyone,
Just bought a 55 plate w203 deisel saloon and love it apart from the poor fuel economy compared to my old BMW Compact & Mondeo which used to give me 50 & 42mpg compared to the c classes 30 driving like Miss Daiseys driver !!!
Now i'm aware that I don't work too far from work (about 10miles) but I used to thrash the ****e out of the bimmer & the worst I ever got was 47mpg. My journey is 2 miles to the M4 6 miles to Maidenhead and another mile or 2 of b roads so I recon it ought to be better - please tell me if i'm expecting too much......

Well after some reading i'm contemplating getting a remap/box fitted which ought to see some gains, but not sure who where to go to in the Slough area - I believe there is a tuning place on the trading estate, but not sure what they're like so can anyone shed some light..... Don't really want to travel far as i'm busy as hell evenings & most weekends but will gratefully accept advice on places within 10-15ish miles radius or a GOOD mobile company - thanks in advance !!!!

seen this on ebay - anyone know anything about them ??

Hi Hairy B ( the left or right one )

Sell it and purchase a petrol car.

Really REALLY !! Sell it..... If petrol is sooo much better then why did I get 50mpg from the bimmer & 40+ from the old mondeo doing the same length of journey ??? Why are london cabs diesel ??? Never got above 30 with any petrol cat unless I was on a run !! My friends 180 Kompressor is barely doing 35mpg on a similar distance so sorry I deliberately bought the diesel for the extra mpg and i'm concerned that there maybe an issue so was asking for advice from the forum experts rather than fork out a wad of cash by going to MB

I'm sorry if this comes over as being rude but as I said in my first post I just bought it so ain't gonna take a hit & sell it straight away - I love the car & the only downside is the mpg.......

That is low,is your temperature gauge sitting just above 80 degrees? lazy thermostats
cause poor mpg as the ecu fuels for a colder engine.rolling resistance, brakes binding etc
is another cause, blocked air filter another...

Oh, and Welcome.:thumb:

A bloke at work get 50mpg from his c220 55 reg no problem at all,

Perhaps check the temp is where it should be, also a service may help to ;)

In my experience remaps will make the MPG even worse, unless doing very long motorway journeys with not too much over the speed limit.

I've got same car. I can regularly get 50mpg out of mine easily more on long motorway runs. Any kinda stop start n low gears high revs is gonna decrease it. What I usually do with every car I buy is try keep revs down every gear change to 2500-3000 for say the 1st week. Including highest gear or in. Also no over taking which will require higher revs which in turn guzzles more fuel. Seriously try it for a day or 2 and u will see what I mean. Concentrate on where our revs are going when u change gear and when our in our highest driving gear. If u got an automatic then ignore everything I just wrote and buy a manual.

Thank you guys THIS is what I thought too !! Btw it is an auto which I know will drop me a few mpg, but not 10-15.....
@Martyz - yes its above 80 and gets there reasonably quickly tho not as fast as my old Ford & thanks for the welcome ;-)
Can't feel any sticky brakes & it takes a while to slow if I take my foot off the go pedal.
It had a basic oil/filter service before I picked it up, but was thinking of swapping the paper air filter with a K&N or one you guys recommend ;-)
@Hitech - I drive around with it around 2000 revs (quite easy to do with an auto with tip). and usually sit at a steady 60-80 mph on the motorway (depends on traffic) but don't hit the kickdown or accelerate hard which is why i'm concerned......
I am about to bung some miilers & inj cleaner in but will wait for when I fill it so I have some form of reference - currently done almost 1/2 a tank for 190 miles if I remember correctly :-(

Thank you all for your advice & please keep it coming - anything constructive is gratefully accepted, but i ain't gonna sell it LOL

Wow, calm down...

London cabs aren't doing short journeys. They're doing ~150 miles per day.

It's the cold engine warming up that makes all engines inefficient, where initially it's basically a big kettle.

MPG aside, petrols are more advisable for short journeys, that's all's what was being said. :thumb:

When my Mrs drives the c220 to the station in the morning 5 mile dual carriage way the engine barely warms up she's averages 30-38 mpg depending if it's a straight run or a bit of traffic

I can do the same journey and easily get 38 all day

On a long run I can average 58-62 mpg the Mrs gets 50-55

The point I'm trying to make is either driving style or a señor messing up your mpg

My golf 2.0 Tdi is crap on fuel on short journies. On a nice run it'll do 55+.
Can't comment on the bmw or mundaneo but I personally would expect what you're getting from the Merc. Sorry.
Get it checked out make sure it's not faulty.
Welcome to the forum!

Erfan will fill up soon with some vpower & bung some good injector cleaner & give it a blat one quiet night

tec - can't feel any unwarranted heat from the wheels so don't think there is any binding but will keep an eye on it

I have just ordered a ocd2 blue tooth code reader which i'll connect to my phone as soon as it arrives....

Thank you all for the advice ;-)
