Hi - getting a dog and need a new car that is up to the job. I don't tend to change cars often so wondering if you can give me some advice, I've a chance of getting a 2015 plate 2.1 C220d Sport but it has a high mileage - 133k.

I'd looked at it and ruled it out but given changes in working patterns I'm not likely to be doing more than 6 or 7k a year with it so wondering what opinions were on reliability on these given how many miles it has done?

Thanks

It’s high mileage for a 5 year old car but in itself 133 isn’t high at all. It’s a C Class not an Austin Metro! You might find suspension parts like shocks start wearing out but it wouldn’t be a reliability concern.

You might find it’s actually your low annual mileage which causes you trouble on a modern diesel - DPF clogging up etc etc. They like being used. A petrol might be a better choice.

Thanks, this is exactly what I'm looking for on the mileage front, had someone scaremongering around that being very high

I have the same engine and it’s on 207k :D

ha! that's pretty comforting, how often are you getting it serviced given the miles?
Just as per MB schedule, every ~15k. The car let’s you know when a service is due.

It is “high” in the traditional sense but your low mileage will make it look a little more respectable in a couple of years.

How much is the car up for sale for?

Not sure that it makes sense to buy a Diesel car if your annual mileage is low?

If you do buy it, your main concern would be to check that the DPF is in good nick (will require an MB OBDII scanner) - they are expensive to fix.

Just south of 10k

Mileage is an unknown tbh, pre COVID was doing 14k. Now I’m not sure...

At the risk of starting a boring debate - there’s no way I would leave oil changes to 15k given the timing chain design on that engine (or petrol M271).
Were they still claiming gearboxes are ‘sealed for life’ in 2015?

I would say 133K isnt to high by merc standards. I am guessing its the OM651 engine, check for timing chain noise on cold start.
Only other issues are water pump and fuel filter housing that can leak coolant.

Our indy looks after a 400K car, just services it, keeps on going..
