Happened yesterday 5.50pm on Mossvalley roundabout in Sheffield I was going towards drakehouse. Other car cut straight in front of me at speed to take the exit towards the M1, made a mess of drivers side wheel arch, bumper and light.

Never even attempted to stop. I saw red and gave chase, shortly releasing my passenger was in shock, so gave up and pulled over.

Really P%SS OFF:mad:. The car was a new MB E class coupe in black.

Only comfort I take is I know his repair bill is going to be much more than mine........and I'm alive of course.

Might be worth asking if there are any cameras covering that area?

I've been to Police Station got ref number and gave details, its in there hands now.

Sorry to hear about your experience. There are some right bar stewards out there! It makes me think that a dash cam is a good idea.

Yes - you might have got the plate then - which would be good enough to start the insurance claim.

i think dash cams are the way forward to be honest. lot of awful people out there who stage accidents often targeting elderly people who don't particularly know the system too well.

got a feeling that before too long dash cams will be mandatory just like dtr lights are on all new cars.

Got them fitted on two cars. Plug in and forget, there when you need it. That said, one does have slight gaps when it recycles. Sods law kicked in when I was sat in front of a cracking road rage incident and it missed the relevant ten seconds :fail

As quite a few cars now have forward-facing (for lane alignment and speed limit awareness) and rear facing (for parking) cameras, I wonder why manufacturers don't build in a dash-cam function. It would cost them virtually nothing and they could put it in the brochure as a £500 option - worth the extra not to have trailing wires or extra stuff on the windscreen, not to mention the effort of fitting them that has been saved.

Daytime running lights are a menace in themselves : over the last week or so I've seen at least one numpty every night driving with no rear lights on at all !

The first one I saw , an Audi A3 , I flashed a couple of times from behind and he realised , putting on his lights with a wave of thanks .

The second one , I came up behind 5 mins later , despite me flashing several times , no response . When he crawled past a queue of traffic in lane 1 , only to push in near the front , I stopped alongside ( nothing coming behind me as it was a section of 2 lane dual carriageway splitting into two to feed onto opposite sides of a motorway , and I was the only one going right ) then tooted , gesturing him to lower his window - the elderly driver duly wound his window down and seemed unable to comprehend he had no rear lights showing .

Every subsequent night I've seen at least one , including one stopped waiting to turn right who was nearly rear ended by a car ahead of me ! Saw one yesterday morning too .

It seems that so many drivers of these vehicles don't realise DTR's are front only ( why ? The ones always fitted to SAABs and Volvos always kept the tail lamps on too ) and don't realise they are all but invisible from behind after dark ; the dashboard lamps lighting up without lights on don't help either .

It almost needs DTR equipped cars to have at least auto-on sidelights , which can't be disabled , for the brain-dead .

besides that - some of these front LEDs are just too bright and cause dazzle .

A good case for having auto-lights that cannot be disabled. Whether cars are fitted with DRLs or not, there are plenty of idiots running without lights when needed

Motorbikes have had permanently on lights for a while , perhaps time other vehicles should be the same ?

Isn't this what DRLs are supposed to fulfil?

In the past 20 years, I have always driven with the headlight on, day and night.

The idea was to make this mandatory across the EU, but it did not work because it is not green.... and the EU would not have it.

DRLs are the solution, LED being low energy consumer (LEDs are running much cooler than Halogens or HIDs), they get the thumbs up for the eco-friendlily bunch.

Exactly the same thing happened to me the other day, no lights on at all at 11pm; it is astonishing that some people are so unaware of their surroundings :wallbash:

By the way, command online fitted my dash cam for £45 last week.

Supposed being the operative word .

The DRL's would be OK if there were associated rear lights always on as well , could be lower intensity rear LED's , but at least we then wouldn't have widespread cars driving around after dark with no rear lights showing .

On my way home tonight I saw the opposite : it was getting dark and an unlit W168 loomed in my rear view mirror , no front lights at all on what was a dirty grey car , as it passed there was an offside tail light and a very bright near side tail light - most likely a 5W/21W dual filament tail/brake lamp inserted the wrong way round .

Lots of one eyed monsters around too .

DRLs were introduced to alert pedestrians of an approaching vehicle. So would be superfluous on the rear.

Auto lights would prevent the problem you (we) are experiencing. When light levels drop to a predefined agreed level, bingo! The change to current implementation is you cannot disable the function. You can of course still switch lights ON whenever you wish.

Indeed , but the original DRL's as fitted for 30+ years by Volvo , SAAB etc and required for all vehicles in some countries , always included rear lights in conjunction .

Having front only lights is just plain silly .

If daytime running lights are fitted to warn of an approaching vehicle, as is my understanding, what good are rear lights for this purpose?

So that you can see what's just hit you and is disappearing over the horizon presumably?

They are useful for the forgetful people who see the pool of light in front of their car after dark and don't realise their back end is in darkness .

The cost of lighting up two tail lamps is minimal , so there's no argument not to have them .
