How frequently to you need to top up Oil?

Mine does not need any additional oil between services (M271 with 40k).

My previous car - which I had for 7 years and sold with 50k on the clock - needed about 1/2 Litre between services.

There is an argument to say that some oil consumption it is actually a good because it better lubricates the piston rings and upper engine. But if it does not need oil top-ups then it does not need it - not much I can do about it...

Hi, first timee on here. Decided to refurb my w124 rather than change it. looking for a maintenence manual. Any good spare parts places recommended????

My R- class have never been in a need for a top up even when letting it run at quite high speeds for long distances on our frequent road trips on the German autobahn which btw is where it really is in its perfect element :) how I love the strips of free speed ;) I am just as this is written finished with my B- service and thanks to a nice co-worker at my job it didn't cost a penny :) compared to an exactly the same car having the same service done yesterday at a cost of 1300£ It is nice to have friends ;)

All engines use oil as far as I can see, its just that for most people the oil used is less than that level which would trigger the sensor to show low oil. On 2 or 3 occasions I have added 0.5 litre to my c230k after covering many many miles and being close to a service. But in the last 3 years - nothing added. It makes me think that some oil changes left me a little "short" on oil from the garage. There is some way between min and max but not sure what it is. The engine is now on 169k miles. The e300d hasn't had anything added to it ever.

Thanks for all your comments.

I have always owned BMWs and they needed regular top up of oil between services. Good to know the Merc probably won't need a top up between services :thumb:
