On my second W124.

Fancy another now.

Maybe an E36 or E500 though.

:D

There are a couple of 124 E36 estates up for sale at the mo if you are interested in an estate. See the thread currently on 'spotted on eBay'

Good car if you worked for MI6 and often laughed out loud!! :D (M166 LOL)!

Actually nice looking car. Wonder what the overheating problem is...

One thing I realy like about those diesel 124s is the air vents in the front wing - wish the 211 had that! :D

I wonder if a poll in 10 years time would show as many W211s compared with the number of W124s in the current poll.
Good question! I reckon the 211 will last well, seems well put together - if the electrics hold out!...

Has anyone found any rust yet on 211? Mine is very late 2005 and no signs.....yet.... :thumb:

Don't really like estates.

Would like a coupe or even a saloon version.

Missed out on a cheap saloon a couple of years back but it needed a lot of paintwork.

Has anyone found any rust yet on 211?

Yes, there were a spots of rust at the bottom of the door and near the wheel arch on my older 2003 one, and a few creeping on the roof where the mountings for a roof rack would go.

I think mine could have been the very last of the ungalvanised W211s as it was registered in May 2003?

My newer 2007 is showing no signs of rust at the moment! :)

Asside from the obvious facelift, do you notice much difference between pre and post facelift 211?

Was the 123 an E class? I thought the "E" started with 124? If I'm wrong I appologise to all 123 owners!! :)

No and , strictly speaking , it is only the 2nd Generation ( facelift models ) from halfway through the W124 production run , at which point they prefixed the model number with the letter 'E' that were designated 'E Class' .

Although the W123 series was the direct predecessor of the W124 , and the W114/115 series in turn before that , the earlier cars belonged to an era where there was little crossover with engines and bodies . Back in the 1950's you basically had three ranges , more or less equivalent to today's C , E and S classes , but with only one engine in each body it was sufficient to describe them as 190 , 220 , 300 , with an S if there were twin carbs and SE if fuel injection was fitted . Later on , by the time the W116 had been introduced , and designated as the S Class ( the first to bear this name ) there was one crossover with the W114 , later the W123 , both of which could have the M110 engine , but it was sufficient to describe the smaller car as the 280/280E depending on whether or not it had injection and 280S/280SE , similarly .

When the W201 was introduced with the same M102 engine as the 200 in the larger series , the model was designated 190 to place it below the larger car , and for marketing reasons as many customers had fond memories of earlier 190's .

As times moved on , and Mercedes diversified with an ever expanding range of body styles , it was no longer sufficient to designate a model based on the engine size alone - so the 'class system' was devised .

Nowadays , with multiple generations of each 'class' having been made : C Class (W202/203/204) ; E Class (W124/210/211/212) ; S Class ( W116/126/140/220/221 ) and more - it is easy to see how those new to the marque can become confused , even though the system is very logical , as Mr Spock might say .

I have had 2x W210 and 1x W211 and now a W212.

All good cars which improved with each upgrade.

My only concern is that Electronically they are getting too complicated for their own good.

Does anyone else have a white e-class estate? I've seen a few old ones, but mine is the only recent one that I've seen since I bought it a few months ago. Mind you, I was looking for a large white estate car for more than a year before I found this one.
