Respray an entire car,

lets say a CLK to MB standards?

If your going to change the colour completely is there a base colour which makes this easier?

Just thinking out-loud:)

If you are going to do it properly , a lot.

Carpets out , engine out , etc etc ....

No one is going to want to buy a blue car down the line with a red engine bay or door shuts ...

You might be cheaper buying one in the colour you want, changing whatever bits you wish and selling the other car.

It's going to be expensive.

Bodywork is seldom cheap as the time it takes for a skilled person to remove bits, prep, paint, finish etc is quite a lot.

A full respray in the existing colour will be probably be about £2k, +/- dependant on exactly how far you go, it's easy to spend more!

It's really not a good idea to change the colour unless it's a one-off restoration project or similar. You're looking at all the shuts, engine bay etc and even then there's more if you're going all out. Probably double the cost of a normal job and never quite right IMHO (HPI check will show colour change etc), it'll hurt the resale value/saleability.

I'd either make a compromise on the colour you're looking for or keep waiting until you find exactly what you're looking for :)

I had a figure of 4k in my head for a top job.

Just wondered re one off colours that are not produced that particular model,

or that crazy guy who turned his into a friesian

Some of the trim on modern cars is also only designed to be fixed to the car once. e.g. Strips along the doors.

I'd budget for all of this type of thing too. As they tend to be expensive!

If you do it properly so the car looks as though it came from the factory my pal reckons a w208 CLK would cost about £10k -£12k it would mean engine out full strip down etc. Same guy just completely changed the colour on one of Chris Evans Ferrari's £21k, regularly changes Range Rover sports to white as factory lead time is so long all for £15k nice work if you can get it.

Surely to goodness you read through my C124 Refurbish thread! ;)

The actual cost of the respray alone was £2500 - cash.

Everything bar the rear screen was removed (windscreen/wings replaced).

I took it upon myself to remove, clean and susequently refit much of the trim - body cladding, grille, badges etc - all of which reduced my costs.

Further consideration must be made for replacing any bits destroyed or broken during removal.

Door reveals and engine bay were not repainted.

I am delighted with a quality job where £2500 is the minimum starting price. Changing the colour will be a financial non-starter...

Colour change = bare shell assuming it's to be done properly.

Bare shell = huge labour...removal of all wiring looms, trims, windows, ancillaries, engine, everything !

If you're leaving this all to the bodyshop, it's got to cost 6k plus for a proper job.

You can get away with it cheaper if you are going to a shade change rather than colour change...i.e. going from color code 199 to 040 is far less work potentially.

I am looking to respray my 55, and I had a quote for £2,500 which sounds about right, but this is for the same colour. A bare metal should be a lot more, plus you are risking of various things going wrong later, rattles etc. Everything will have to be removed including wiring harnesses etc. It has to be a garage you can really trust.

I got quoted ''just over two grand'' for a baremetal respray recently....which has made me, and mates all feel abit uneazy. far too cheap:o

Mines already been sprayed once from midnight blue to gold metalflake black. but since It's now damaged and I'm replacing the doors, been thinking a proper job is too mad(for now, lol).

I'll get the damage fixed and the new doors(also a horrific keyscratch down the drivers side) matched up to the current paint...any guide to price please guys?(told 750ish)

Would also appreciate if you can tell me what the side strips are called and where to get them :o (Doorhandles to do a houdini...shaved. lol)

A colleague of mine was recently quoted by an MB main dealer for a same colour respray on his R129. It came out at around £3,800.
