HOWTO: cheap bonnet star replacement

Bonnet star

Some scumbucket attempted (unsuccessfully) to break off my star, this left it flopping about.

I found the inner spring had lost it's tension and all I had to do was fit a washer and split pin to re-tension it. The star now stand erect as intended, all for buttons (No No a washer you idiot).

Won't standard SLK centre caps fit your new wheels?

Yes you can, but the wheels you bought dont have the standard size centre. I doubt MB do one to fit...

Centre caps are around 75mm based on this posting

http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=281&highlight=centre+caps

but I thought they were always referred to as 80mm diameter?

For Blue and Chrome SLK style, pic as above, part no. is: B66470120 or at least that was the number on the bag. They were approx £6.50+VAT per cap when I got mine.

which is cheap as my brabus centres cost £140 ... good ole ebay :)

Yeah, they are 75mm or slightly over from memory.

The blue centre caps original part no. is A170 400 00 25

If you are purchasing genuine mercedes wheels, 99% of them from 1985 upwards are all this standard size.

I have moved this question to a fresh post so we dont clutter this How to.....

For all you boys out there...

The 'fitting kit' forgot to get the nut in the pic!

And the larger 'smooth badge' from the sprinter/vito/129

Part numbers :
901 817 0316
638 817 0116
129 888 0116

all exactly the same part!

I did both versions, put them side by side, and i prefer the way nicks sits in the recess personally...

It looks a little more oem doesn't it? :)

BTW I removed the flat badge and put the proper ornament back on again for the wedding car ribbon. I thought it'd be a nightmare to take the flat badge off, I had visions of paint coming off with the adhesive and everything, but in fact it literally fell off when I pushed it from behind, so I have no idea what was holding it in place! ;)

Badge replacement the other way? W163 ML

I'm looking at purchasing a W163 ML and would like to fit the raised badge replacing the flat one to it once I have one.

I assume the bonnet would need the hole cut as the std badge is held in by pins?

I reckon it'd look great on the ML.

Anyone done this mod?

It's a fairly major task as AFAIK the flat ornament is larger than the upright ornament and there will be a gap all around the base/recess. As stated you'd also need to cut a hole in the bonnet.

Although I have seen a G-Wagen with an upright ornament it might not have been done on any other model before! :)

I would be careful just putting double sided tape on flat badge. I have lost 2 badges that way blew off on the motorway. At £10.60 a time it was starting to get expensive so since found a secondhand fitting kit (£2) no problems as firmly held in place.

Sounds like a challenge.

I need the Merc first (!) and then some photoshops, and depending on the look (I reckon it'll be good) then I may just give it a go 8)

blimey well hope you are handy with a dremel... its not just a hole, its recessed and a particular shape..

A professional would get a donor bonnet from a breaker, cut the section out and then weld it in place on the target bonnet ;) . That's proper modding :)

Me too, except the body shop knocked the last one off. What's the part number for the fitting kit for the G-wagen badge please?
