HOWTO: Lock Set Change on a W124

Well at long last i can post part of the "howto" on a lock change. I will appologise for the picture quality but will try my best at describing the procedure and the times taken.

First of all obtain a lock set from your stealers at £168 inc VAT.

Door Lock

Tools required
3mm Allen Key
Flat bladed screwdriver

Open one of the doors and look for the second grommet down (middle of this pic) remove grommet and place somewhere safe.

Take a 3mm allen key and insert into grub screw at bottom of hole and unscrew 9 turns

lock3.jpg

put your key on the lock and turn anticlockwise 1/4 turn.

Pull the key back and pull on the door handle, this will pop the lock backwards and out.

Refitting is by reversal of this proceedure. Actual time to change a door lock 90 seconds.

The Glove Box

Tools required
Phillips screwdriver
4 dress making pins
Hot water

This part is a little harder than doors so please be tollerant.

Open the glove box and locate the three screws (two on the right hand side of the pic and the third directly below the cup cutout). Take the screws out and place in a safe place. Pull the mechanism forward and out of the housing.

1gb2.jpg

Push the 4 dressmaking pins under the clips as per the pics and work the clip over the barrel. A liberal soaking in hot water is advisable if you dont want to break any of the 4 securing clips. Note where the geared portion is.

Take the colar off the new barrel

and place into apeture. Making sure that the geared portion is correctly aligned. There is a keyway there. Press the clip over the end of the barrel. Offer back up to the housing in the glove box lid, but look inside and make sure that the geared track inside is pulled to the right. Replace the three screws and test. Time 10 mins.

Ignition Lock

Tools Required.
2mm metal wire
screwdriver
Bottle of Scotch
Glass tumbler

This task can either be easy or a Sod. In the case of My 260 it was a sod. The 200T took 3 mins. First remove the plastic surround from the lock enclosure using a small screwdriver. It is held in by three pegs. One on the right hand side and two on the left. Release the right hand side one first.

Then put the key in the lock and turn to position 1. Insert the home made extraction tool into the two holes. Note, allen keys etc will not work as in the bottom of the enclosure are two clips that need a tapered tool to release.

Firmly press on the tool while pulling on the key. In a perfect world it pops out. Open Bottle of Scotch and have a nip while swearing. Depending on the age of the lock depends on how much jiggling you have to do. Eventually it pops out

Once out beat to death and throw away. Take the new lock and examine it. You will see a broad protrusion.

This goes in at 5 oclock (position not time). place in apeture and then take the black cover and slide over it. Gentley insert the key without pressing home. Turn Key to position 1, align the black cover with the cutout in the housing body and press both the black cover and the lock home. Reopen the Bottle and take another nip, you deserve it. Time for the job (Red Shed) 3 mins. The 260 due to it never having been out before 2 hours.

Boot Lock

To be continued when my stealer gets the right lock
