I dont want my car to get written off

Given your large (own damage) excess - which you would be liable it it was written off or repaired. Not claiming for you damage from your insurers seems a sensible option - let the moped rider claim and sort yours out yourself.

If the insurance writes the car off, ie its a total loss and your paid marker value for it, the vehicle will be a Cat C or D. Most older cars tend to go on as a Cat C, and a catD would suggest the car is still economical to repair. A catC means the car is uneconomical to repair, with this car being in that category.

Yes but the garage who are approved by them are actually talking out of their rears. Just because my headlamp was loose (which i later fixed) they wanted to replace the entire unit. Same goes for the grill. Its pathetic and i'm going to try and find someone else to do the work.

My Astra just had a little ding in the rear above the bumper and a cracked light and they worte it off Cat D
I bought it back off insurance bought a new rear light knocked out the dent got the car VIC'd (all cars written off must go through a VIC before they can be brought back on the road)

Shouldn't be the case. Cat D retains the V5, cat C has to have VIC check. If the V5 was retained by DVLA then it's Cat C.
£3k worth of damage would almost certainly put an Astra into Cat C territory.

Not correct on the catagories.

I'm not worried about the car getting categorised D or C, because i know it wont, the damage is no where near that bad.
If the Ins. Co write the car off it will be catagorised, it has to be otherwise it wouldn't be written off.

A Category C Vehicle is a Salvaged Vehicle which is damaged to the extent that the retail cost of repair to the vehicle exceeds the retail pre-accident value thereof.

A Category D Vehicle is a Salvaged Vehicle which is damaged to the extent that the retail cost of repair to the vehicle does not exceed the retail pre-accident value thereof.

Where does it mention Cat A and B.?

Looks like Experian don't know what they are talking about then..., which is a bit of a problem as they are the ones who supply the history reports..from the insurance companies.

Their description seems to tally as well.

Maybe they are all wrong...:o

It might be cheaper to BUY a whole w202 car and take bits off it, then scrap it or break it yourself, they can be had for peanuts.....

Surely a Cat C stigma on an already low value car would render it almost worthless?

Best bet seems to be to right it off.

Buy it back, sell or keep the bits you want

Buy a new one with the proceeds

At that end of the market , many buyers don't care .

I've bought many cars from scrapyards or private buyers with no MOT , all I care about is that they're straight and run well .

Just looks like a bumper! What a shame/pain! Hope you get it sorted!

Deffo!
Just needs a bumper and probably only the bumper cover at that. Might be a good excuse to get a facelift bumper which would be a worthwhile mod. There is quite a bit of 'how to do's 'on this forum with regard to changing this. From memory, the end fixings had to be changed for the later ones but these are inexpensive from the stealers. I personally wouldn't bother going thru the insurers with yours and repair it yourself.
Good luck!

I'm struggling to see the problem.

Simply don't claim for the damage to your car.

Dave!

I was just a bit thrown and downhearted when the idiots from the garage nominated by the insurance company said it'll definately be a right off. I'm not sure if you guys can see it, but the bonnet has also been dented and the grille is slightly bent (hence why the idiots want to replace the entire bonnet and grille for extra $$$)

I was just toying with the idea of getting written off and getting some "free money" then repairing it myself.

Or just simply repairing it myself.

Dont like the idea that it will get recorded as a CAT C if this happens though.

I'd like to thank you all for contributing ideas to this thread though, really appreciate it.

Adam
