I haven't got a sunroof and I want one!

I went out my way to source a w203 that had several toys, one being a sunroof. That was on the advice of a friend, and am I glad I did.
It makes the cabin so much more bright and airy, even when closed.
Its well worth the hassle and expense I assure you and you wont regret it for one second.
Its rare to find a Mercedes that has had one fitted from new, and its one of the very extras that do add value and desirability. Even more than COMAND in my humble opinion. You can retrofit COMAND easily, but not a sunroof.

I'd agree totally on the Coupe

I did exactly the same with my coupe - without the pano roof, its a small and dark car - with it...

I actually did the same with the Zafira, specifying the full length glass roof - again much better and lighter

I guess its taste, but I like light n 'airy cabins

I have to check first with sunroofs being 6'7", but my old coupe has an electric sliding roof AND a lower roof line than a saloon and i still have about an inch of clearance for me head, (cant wear a hat though. :D ) Sunroofs only leak if the drain channels get blocked or the rubbers go bad and tyey generally go bad at the same time you window rubbers do but windows dont have water sitting on them all the time so you dont notice, its not hard work to buy a roll of welding wire and poke it down the channels gently once a month or so to keep em clear.

I love webasto roofs, had em on a few of my cars, but they are so easy to break into it makes you have to think about where you can park your car.

6'7"..............

Blimey.

I am only 6'3", or thereabouts.

Perhaps I should start calling myself "Fairlyaveragedave".

yes people are discussing different things here.

The older webasto panoramic cloth/plastic rooves would not be suitable.

the only one that will work is the standard sized glass one, and I mean the latest ones.... they look fantastic once fitted.. you really have to see one.

Fitted properly they wont leak, wont whistle.

The 700 is the one to go for.. not sure about the new 900..

I detest sunroofs in any shape or form. Much of this is down to once having to drive 100 miles in a storm with a sunroof jammed half way shut and another car that, even with a seat lowering kit fitted, I had to drive with my head canted to the right.

May have made sense when aircon was not that common but to me they add little benefit now other than to inflate the price.

Rant over. I feel all better now.:)

As a good compromise, I would be perfectly happy to have a simple non-opening window in the roof with a retractable sun shield. I would still then have the benefit of the extra light, but without the potential drawbacks of leaks and faults. And of course it would be much cheaper as well.

i cant see the point of a glass roof, just get your head hot in summer and cold in winter and if your gonna have a shade anyway whats the point?

i prefer sliding metal roofs, windows down and roof open on a nice day is much more enjoyable than having the aircon on, mind you i do tend to like an open top car, have had loads of kit cars, jeeps and convertibles with canvas roofs and quite often no doors. :D

glass sunroofs make the interior brighter even when closed

I really like the glass sunroof, they are solar glass so when they are closed you don't burn your head, nor do I notice the cold - at the end of the day, it probably adds about 15% extra glass to the cabin but the heaters are plenty good enough to compensate for that :)

They make the interior of the car lighter and feel more 'airy' and on a summers day it's just another way of getting more air through the car

Both my w210s have glass sunroofs, her's only tilts, the sliding mechanism is broken and would need the headlining removed to repair it so i've not bothered!

Maybe its my fear of spy satellites, i spose i could wear a tin foil helmet in a glass roofed car. :D

This is what we have on the B class- fixed pano roof- approx 1/2 price of sliding lamella roof & more glass area. Is standard on facelift B class now.
We feel it is worth it- adds to cabin experience

Me too, I'm so glad our W203 also has a glass sunroof. Not many people spec them now but it certainly adds another dimension to the car.

Ive got the large pano roof in my 5 series , i really like sunroofs.

Yours is an Msport with black headlining. I suspect with out the sun roof it would be a tad dark in there. I had a BMW with that headlining and the roof really lifted the car out of darkness. However with a light interior a roof isn't really needed.

I've never seen a pano roof like the BMWs on a 211 E class. The saloons have the "twin" sunroofs but the estates I've never seen.

I wouldn't have bought my coupe without one

sorry make that

I couldn't have bought my coupe without one

Thats whats putting me off buying a Nissan GTR R35 Spec V. No sunroof [ yeh right ]

Wow! what a mixed bunch of responses - just what I wanted ;)

The wife's Qashqai has a full length glass roof which is great, but doesn't open - I've even got a sunroof in my L200 :D

I will look into a Webasto Hollandia 700 - thanks for all the advice

Sunroofs are like any other option on a Merc. You either like them or you don't. There are Merc owners who do not rate Comand and prefer to use a Tomtom! Each to his own. Xenons and heated leather are nice but you can live without them if you don't have them.
I love sunroofs and miss my CLK not having one. Its nice to tilt the roof for fresh air and not have the climate control on.
The car's lovely with all 4 windows down and the pillarless look but I'd like a glass sunroof. When I was searching for my car I found two, one with and the other without. I went for VIBES G as she had lots more...electric heated seats, keyless go and a phone. Both had Comand.
I was luckier when searching for our XC90. Few have sunroofs. I found one with all the toys with the bonus of a sunroof.
I'm thinking of keeping the CLK for longer and have researched retro fiting a roof. I guess I'm not brave enough to pay £xx for someone to take a hack saw to my fixed roof!!

don't be hard on yourself, fairly average would be 5'10".

How about calling yourself "notastallaspopuptoasterbutnevethelessmuchtallerthantheaveragedave"?

PS Got the 159 from new so was able to spec a sunroof and did so. So glad I did, I love it!

PPS I didn't put that space in, it's not there when I try to edit :(
