Can someone give me some advice on purchasing a Fault Code Reader and where I may be able to get one. The Data-link connector is a round 38pin socket.

Thanks in advance

What model car is it for? I am pretty sure i have seen one of these made by Draper at my local Maccess store (trade only) and if i remember rightly they would probably retail at about £60.00.It may be worth asking your local car accessory shop if he can get you one. If he is unable to i will certainly have a look for you myself.

It's for a 1996 C230K (W202) Engine No 111.975.

Will have a look on the Draper site.

Thanks

Yes i have one of these myself and it is made by UIF TECH www.uiftech.com it's supplied with a handbook with a list of codes relating to the engine and transmission. You can read the code then you must repair the fault before you can clear the lights on your instrument panel. It will not fit your car though. I am still pretty sure i saw a one for your car made by Draper and will check up today.

I have also been searching for a reasonably priced Fault Code reader for the 38-pin socket but without success. There are plenty of the OBD2 16-pin versions around (for about £20) and I had hoped that I could make an adapter lead to handle the plug conversion. However I believe that the signal interface on the 38-pin is MB specific and there is no direct translation to the 16-pin interface (ie it is not strictly an OBD2 protocol). If anyone has further information on this, I would be glad to hear about it.

Well - I got a draper 38 pin code 'resetter' - ripped it apart, and connected it up to a OBDII scanner - I can read injector times etc etc and major fault codes...

you need to connect +, -, and the K line iirc. My brother currently has the unit and laptop - hes in guildford... so I cant show you at the moment.

Try a search for wiring diagram and you can find the pin numbers you need (its about number 8 or so - RHS near the 'top' )

WOW! Sounds complicated, how easy is it or do you need to be a bit of a electronics expert?

Thanks for looking.

Looks interesting what guydewdney did with one of those, I wonder how easy it is to modify one.

Cheers

Absolutely no idea if this helps or not but happened to come across it today so i thought would post just in case.

All this techie stuff is beyond me i am afraid :)

Hi norman, i bought the coder reader.. and it is working very well. The problem is i have to use classic notebook ( my friend's notebook) .. which has printer port ( 9 pin at back of notebook).
Latest notebook does not has printer port, all of them use usb port. Then i bought serial cable converter inorder to use my notebook but it made me disspointed, it says communication cable error. Maybe any body know how to solve it.
