I really need some of your wisdom chaps, I've found a 2003 S320CDI that on paper looks good, I'm flying up to Manchester on Saturday to have a look at it, so can you tell me what faults i need to look for aswell as the normal rust issues, also do they suffer from the Valeo radiator problem, tia Chris

Thanks Seamster, if it only has part maindealer service history and then indy service can i now get it serviced by MB to keep mobilo going? Am i right in assuming by suspension issues you mean any knocks or clonks?

I think you have to have full main dealer service history to preserve Mobilo, I'm no expert but there are many here. Suspension - I understand that the S class has some fancy suspension setup that can cause problems, again no expert but just remember reading about the woes of others.

I understand that there have been some issues with the relay for the Airmatic pump on the W220. Not aware of any specific rust or radiator problems with this one. I can highly recomend S Class driving, just so long as you have a 1000cc V twin in the garage when you feel the need for speed.
In my case a RSVR Aprilia:o

From what I understand, MB will re-instate Mobilo if you get the next service at main MB dealer - but, BIG BUT, get this agreed beforehand! Otherwise I would just use a very good Indy (plenty available) and join the AA/RAC/AutoAid other breakdown organisations are available....

Thanks guys I'll check with MB about the mobilo reinstatement, I've already got a S430 which is a great drive but with a couple of niggling faults so it's gotta go, I'm sure i'll miss the v8 power but be happier with the economy, and as Mactech says theres always the V2 bike for a blast at the weekend, once again thanks for your help chaps.

Basically, whether you can re-instate Mobil or not depends on the date of registration.

You’ll find all the details about Mobilo here: -

The best defence against rust is galvanising of all steel panels. You’ll find details here: -

The S class and CL class are built of a combination of aluminium and steel. For the aluminium components there is, of course, no galvanising process.

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1 2003 production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4 2002) the process was gradually introduced on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during this lead-up period, but not all.

So you need to check the production date not just the date of first registration.

These are complex cars and when serviced MB dealers provide numerous updates at no charge. FullMBSH is your safest bet IMO. Equally I would check out stock at MB dealers where you will get a full 12 month guarantee on approved used stock. Their prices are surprisingly competitive at the moment.

Fabulous cars. Wonderful magic carpet ride even on the UK's under-maintained roads. Without equal, IMO.
