Increase your broadband speed!

The faceplate I got has extra terminals to allow you to pass the ADSL signal through to the extension sockets elsewhere in the house, if that's what you want/need to do.

Any idea why the filtered faceplate gives a significant improvement compared to using a good microfilter in the same socket? :dk:

Edit - just checked, and the 20+ year old wired phone in my workshop rings fine with just the 2 wires connected at the master socket.

Bill, I have seen the faceplate you describe and is a good solution to being able to plug a router in at any extension socket.
The phone in your workshop will ring with only two wires connected to the 'master' socket. A master socket will have a bell capacitor in it. The NTE5 (one with the faceplate) replaced this in order to make a demarkation point between your provider's wiring and end user wiring.

The reason why the filtered faceplate is better is because the ADSL signal stops there and doesn't go all round the house where it could pick up all sorts of non audiable interfence that may degarade the signal.

So - if you only have 1 telephone socket in the entire house (I didn't build it!) so run a wireless n router (with filter) and cordless phone base station from that socket, changing to the filtered baseplate would not be benificial?? Am I understanding this correctly?

Do you mean TalkTalk provide you with broadband at 5.5mbps and pay them nothing?

course not, pay them something between £15-20 a month for telephone line rental as you would with any landline and that's it.

all this talk of high speeds is no good if you down load 50gb+ a month like i do (i collect old tv series that are not on dvd and have 3tb worth so far)

i was with BT and they capped you from 8am to 10pm for £25 a month

with o2 it cost me about £7 a month for 24/7 speeds of 600 down & 120 up

virgin may well offer 25mb but you get even close to 50gb a month and you will be shot/charged/shot again

If you download alot Be There Unlimited are best ADSL provider for high usage. http://www.bethere.co.uk

On Virgin 50mb and 100mb there is no cap but if you download over 350gb a month peak time (9am - 9am) they will contact you asking you to move more of your usage to off peak.

Are you speaking about Virgin Cable BB?

If so you can download about 10gb a day on a 20mb connection without being 'traffic managed'. Even then the management is to reduce the speed by 75% for a few hours that day. I.e. to about 5mb on a 20mb connection. I am not aware of any monthly limit.

This is all explained here:

Our traffic management policy

Yes virgin cable bb. Yes there is traffic management on the lower speed packages upto 30mb but not on the 50mb and above.

Regarding the 350gb 'limit' although it is not on Virgins site they have posted on their own support forum about their 'detrimental usage polcy' and that users downloading over 350gb a month peak time will be contacted about their usage and yes people have been getting the letters.

Have to say, O2 is the best provider I've dealt with so far. Technical support has been consistently excellent. I was on the phone last week with a problem connecting to my work VPN (which I'd never tried before). The guy I was speaking to said he didn't know a lot about VPN connections and he would have to escalate to 2nd level support. I was expecting the normal 24 hour delay at that point, but he said 'hold the line - I'll be right back with you'. And he was, and they fixed my problem there and then.

All for £7.66 a month, although this is going up to £9.50 soon :(
