Have owned my first Mercedes for a month now and the engine warning light has been on twice and there is a weird intermittent rattle from the engine once the engine is warm and more noticeable in sport mode or on de-accelaration.

SLK 200 AMG Sport 7G BlueEfficiency 2012 44500 miles

Engine codes: P001492 & P001477

Have taken it to a local MB Independent Specialist who has diagnosed a new timing chain/belt. They suggested I should take it to a dealer and kick up a fuss as it has been serviced regularly by a Merc dealer and will otherwise cost £1000 to fix.

Any thoughts?

If you are still skeptical, go to any dealer for a second opinion!

Local dealer looked at car today and has diagnosed that the wrong oil filter was fitted and the housing was damaged causing an air leak and lack of pressure which caused the rattling noises and engine light.

Unfortunately the filter had collapsed and shattered and tiny bits of plastic have been sucked into the engine.

They are going to change oil, filter and housing and have said they can't guarantee if any plastic will remain.

I'll keep the thread going until I've driven it around for a while! :dk:
