iPhone 3 cradle upgrade for iphone 4???

Hi, New member.
I have a 2009 SL350. Brought an iPhone cradle for iPhone 3. Now have upgraded my iPhone to a 4. Sort of fits the cradle!!! as the command system knows there is a phone but will not activate. Went to MB world and they said that "the chip" in the cradle would not recognise iPhone4. Is this nonsense? Seems to me if MB can upgrade the firmware for an iPhone 4 to a 4s why is there no firmware upgrade for a 3 to a 4.
Any thoughts?

The iphone 3/3GS cradle is physically designed for the iphone 3 range. The iphone 4 is a different shape and not designed to fit into an iphone 3 cradle.

Have you tried pairing the phone to the cradle first?

Some people have taken a dremel to their iphone 3 cradles to make an iphone4 fit into it but this is obviously something you have to decide for yourself.

Thanks, I can fit the phone in the cradle and I've turned the bluetooth on but it doesn't find the command blue tooth. The command system identifies that a phone has been inserted and I can see the blue flashing light from the cradle, but it just doesn't activate. The phone is being charged on the cradle. The technician at MB world took the car into the service bay where they have their computer that has the iPhone 4 to iPhone 4s upgrade but he came back to say that "a chip" in the cradle was the problem and that since Mercedes didn't make the cradle , the only thing to do was to buy a new cradle!!
My friend just leaves her phone in her bag inside her car (Seat something) and the system picks up her bluetooth perfectly and OK she can't use the phone when driving but the bluetooth still works. Why not in the Mercedes?

Its fixed itself!!!!iphone 4 in iphone3 cradle

Have just turned my iPhone 4 back on and gone to the blue tooth setting and it stated iPhone cradle not found!!! therefore I think you have to turn the phone off and back on again!. Has transferred all my contacts and works on hands free.
