There doesn't seem to be a OBDII connector below the dash on my 1998 W202 estate. Looking at the Haynes Manual, there appears to be a 32 pin round connector in the engine bay (behind the washer bottle).

There are numerous sellers on ebay selling OBDII connector to 32 pin connectors, assuming the connections are correct, will the OBDII computer actually talk to the W202?

You need to specify if you want to only read codes or if you want to undertake coding.

Full coding doesnt depend on the format of the plug. The basic requirement is the coding tool such as the dealer diagnostic.

Given the age of the car there is a limited amount of CAN data for starters which makes an OBD II tool less meaningful.

OBDII relies of the ability to interact with K-line data and CAN-bus data as required. Looking at your setup I would think that the engine may have this data. Everything else is hardwired to a much greater extent than say ... 2000 version of the same car.
