Is Steering Wheel Stitching Issue a Warranty Covered Item?

Hello all,

So I picked up my C300h (66 plate) Friday afternoon. Earlier this evening whilst driving I felt something and noticed the stitching on the steering wheel just above 3 o’clock/where the silver section is, was missing and was in fact hanging loose from further up as it had “unthreaded”. I didn’t notice it when I picked it up as it naturally curves around the back of the steering wheel.

Obviously I intend to call Mercedes up on Monday morning but wondered if this is something they’d sort as an issue pre sale or would it be an warranty job? Surely it shouldn’t have unthreaded/come loose so early in its life ??

They wouldn't sort it before a sale. they, like pretty much any other dealer, would leave it (presuming they had even seen it) and wait to see if the new owner notices/bothers about it.

Thanks for the replies guys. The salesman said he’ll call me tomorrow morning to see how I’m getting on and to discuss the service pack. If I don’t hear by 10am I’ll give him a call or just pop in. It’s only up the road.

Thanks again. I’ll update on Monday :)

Quick update. He’s gonna ask and get back to me. If I don’t here back from him in an hour or so I’ll head in.

The warranty lady took pictures. They’ve confirmed it will be a steering wheel replacement job. Just waiting for whomever they send it to to authorise/agree basically. Should find out by the end of the week.

Mercedes madness, a car this new should not need referring back to manufacturer.

From what I can make out, different dealers seem to have different levels at which they can self authorise warranty work / replacement parts. Having said that, I agree that for an obvious fault such as this, it seems A little ludicrous that referral to MB is necessary.

They said something about the cost of the replacement wheel for something so minimal etc. But the sales man seemed sure it’d be ok.

Who do I complain to if they come back with a no? The lady seemed to agree it isn’t right that the threads come loose like that.

I’m sure they will sort it.

Worst case I’m sure MB used to give you 30 days to reject a used car.

Isn't that limited to choosing another car within the group though?

ok guys. Got the call today.

All authorised. Just waiting for the new wheel to come in and they’ll call me up to bring it in. Apparently will take a couple of days to swap it out

They said I’d get a courtesy car whilst it’s in.

The sales man then called me a few hours later to see if they called me as he was just told it’s been authorised.

I also received a call from Mercedes this morning. An aftercare call to make sure everything was fine and if I was happy with the car and how I was dealt with through the whole process.

It’s all new to me. Toyota never did that with a new car let alone a nearly new lol.

I think you are in for rude awakening if you carry that thought for any length of time.

Simply visit a few different dealers to demonstrate... :D

Well we have had excellent customer service from our MB dealer over the last twelve-years.

The told me it was a replacement wheel as they don’t do repairs of that sort. I thought X days over hours/mins seemed a bit OTT as well though.

I suppose the new steering wheel is some sort of skeleton wheel and they have to carefully move all the trim bits, electronics, airbag, etc from the old steering wheel, then test it.

Still, two days sounds a lot.
