Is Steering Wheel Stitching Issue a Warranty Covered Item?

I went back this morning. They had the same technician have a look. He says it’s fine. I then requested to go out for a test drive with him. We did. I showed him what was happening. We switched seats and it wasn’t happening. He set the steering straight and let go of the car. Car went straight. I didn’t test it like that. He said I should.

Point to note: he drove the car faster than I. He says if it was a problem it would be worse at higher speeds. I asked why was it doing it earlier when I drove with him in the car. He had no real answer. Went on to tell me mercs up to a certain time recently all moved left. He said if it was his car it’s not a problem as his own C class (last model before this) goes left way worse than my non existent (in his eyes) issue.

He said when he changed a/wheels he marks things up so he puts everything back as it was.

Driving faster I notice it doesn’t happen. Slower it does. He wouldn’t hold the wheel straight to test it as that’s not the way. He also said he wouldn’t have done anything that effected the tracking. I said told him just the wheel isn’t on proper straight. He says in his opinion it is fine. I was left being told to ‘monitor it’.

I’m left feeling am i imagining it, am i being over sensitive to it? Can the so. It’s the first thing I check when I drive a car and i am certain there is now a difference since the s/wheel was changed.

Also the rattle from the over head control panel, we both heard within seconds of pulling out of their car park! So it’s rebooked for that.

They told me they can send it for Tracking at another dealer but if it’s all fine it’s at my cost.

My original pleasure with them was falsely placed!

What did I expect, this is the Mercedes that told me last year my last c class’s brakes were worn 90% front and back. I went to a Indy specialiast who said they were fine. Those same brakes, a year later at the last service only the rears were apparently worn 90%...... still lol.

That’s a difficult one, I guess you need a second opinion.

I cannot see changing a steering wheel would affect the cars geometry unless as you say it’s not on straight.

You will know your car better than anyone else.

I would be getting a second opinion to put my mind to rest, maybe see if there are any other forum members near you to assess.

Drive it somewhere straight and flat, not a public road or at least a quiet one, come to a stop with where the steering wheel needs to be to drive straight and then take a photo and post it on here!

I was thinking I need a second opinion too.

I have two options. A local Mercedes Indy. Or my mate who is a Land Rover specialist. His place is not local though.

As for taking a pic etc, I will have to find somewhere that fits the bill and post a pic. It’s comms have to be a car park I guess.

Oh and if any member is north London based and wants to help assess then please get in touch.

How are your front wheels and tyres ?

They filled the car with fuel which meant driving it , have they rattled a pothole whilst doing so and the wheel is actually on straight but something else is causing the issue ?

If you based in North London, take a drive to Wheels In Motion in Chesham and save yourself a whole lot of ag!

I pulling up a black boots wheels in motion, is this right? It’s a long way and if I’m travelling there over the merc specialist in my town (they even have star access) I would probably go along to my mates garage which is roughly the same distance. Good to know though.

In my opinion the front wheels look like they are pointing to the left slightly. I’ll have another look as it was dark when I checked it. Haven’t looked since my trip to Mercedes.

Yeah that's it, same place.

I use them and I am an hour and a half away. I'd rather it done once and done right!

They can sort out your whole geometry too including the pulling left (although I seem to remember there were a handful of Mercs that couldn't be fixed even by them - that may have changed now though).

I remember after I had it done on my last car and it was a massive improvement - felt like new!

Ok sounds good. Apparently I’m 45 mi a away but I’d imagine it’d be closer to an hour.

What’s their pricing like, and if their was a problem, would I then need to reclaim from
Mercedes some how? Or would I have them investigate to locate the problem then get Mercedes to fix it?

How could you prove to MB that the requirement of re-setting of steering geometry was not due to anything you had done to the car in the interim?

Life is short, choose your battles carefully.............

I think they charge £100 for the check and then so much per adjustment (£5 I think?).

The thing is, you will do it once and it will be sorted properly. You wont have uneven tyre wear and the car should drive beautifully afterwards.

I've taken mine back twice to them and I've only had it since August 2016. My last car went there 3 times.

Well worth the money. Forget about Mercedes as DSM10000 stated above. It will be worth a hundred bucks to save you having to keep going back to MB all the time, wasting your time and money and still getting annoyed at the poor quality workmanship and some dumbass telling you there is nothing wrong.
