It's gone...

Hello

In you shoes I would be tempted to try something newer, Almost any AMG merc would be nice? but as you said maybe something such as a 911, Mercs are nice but its also good to try other stuff while you can.

What sort of budget do you have?

The 2.5-16 for me was just a plaything, a 3rd/4th 'hobby' car that wasn't/isn't needed for daily transport.

Considering how little I use such a car, I need to make sure that whatever I buy will hold it's value well - I just couldn't justify buying something that would lose money sitting and not being used. The classic insurance aspect of an older car is also appealing, helps with the running costs (was about £120 PA for the 190E)

I've had new cars before - and it's all quite underwhelming to me. I have/will drive anything to be honest.

Having sold both of my 2.5-16s I'm keen to make sure that if I use all of the cash it goes on something worthy. If I'm going to be looking at an older 911 to keep I'd need to stretch the budget but realistically I'd like to spend less if I can.

If I take on a bargain AMG it wouldn't be because it fits in with my 'classic' car ethics, but because they're great value for money and I'd like to experience one (at least briefly) whilst I can before settling into another sensible/classic like my 2.5-16 was.

C43s were £10-15k when I bought my 190E and CLK55s about £20-25k! It seems like a great time to try something like that out for a short while.

I'd like to think that being an instant cash buyer would at least go someway towards negotiating a good deal on a suitable car :)

Did you consider buying abroad?

Did you consider buying abroad?

Not really - it'd need to be something exceptional that I really wanted to make it worthwhile.

Especially as exchange rates aren't great for Europe etc.

I'm just considering my options at the moment.

There is little out there that will fill the hole in your heart left by a 190 cossie!

215 CLs are nice looking cars :), but I understand that they can be ruiniously expensive to look after (ABC suspension etc) and I'm not sure it would fit in my garage! Probably not the most sensible choice for me also depreciation-wise and the driving experience is probably more suited to wafting on motorways rather than as a weekend plaything.

There's no doubt that they're fantastic value for money though

Because they're rare/collectable cars and because of the link with Porsche. In much the same way as my (now sold) 2.5-16 was worth quite a reasonable amount. They don't really depreciate any more, where as new cars do. Good 500E/E500s have actually risen in price over the last few years it seems.

Specialist dealers normally ask for a bit more anyway but I agree that £18500 seems like quite a lot.

Thanks for the links however I'm only giving a 500E/E500 a very casual consideration - it would have to be a stunning example at a good price to tempt me away from the other options in all honesty.

Will you would have loved my mint E500 I sold a couple years ago for £5500!

I remember when you sold it ;)

I thought it sold cheap, but no disrespect - I didn't think it was 'mint', hence the price?

They certainly seemed to have picked up a bit in value since then though.

Hmm....

You've an itch for a Porsche, but perhaps not the budget, would consider the 500E with it's ties to Porsche, you are comfortable already with the concept of a special car that costs more than a regualr equivalent, you won't use the car much and so want something with as slight a depreciation as possible, you like something special and talking of AMG you like performance....your solution...

Audi : Audi Porsche RS2

Nice idea Graham, and I like your reasoning - but to be honest that car does nothing for me.

I 'get' the appeal of them and can understand their value, but I don't really fancy an old Audi and I couldn't really lust after an estate car.

Thanks for the suggestion all the same. O/T, but I still think that your S4 was a great buy those few years ago - low mileage mint car IIRC

I missed classic car insurance off my list :D

I saw one on the road today, in RS blue, which is what probably made it fresh in my mind. A very special car IMO, but one you either get excited about or don't I guess. Thought it might have been up your street actually, but alas not. Better stop or I'll talk myself into one.

Since someone has mentioned Porsche already, I'll chance my arm and suggest a 944 S2 or a 968. Both have similiar build quality to early 90's Mercs and are probably very near the bottom of their depreciation curve. I've taken a notion for one myself just for a change.

not elegant .. And looks very dated.

Ugly, imho
+1
