Jaguar and Land Rover

But surely that's the point of this type of marketing exercise. If Renault or Honda put up one of their faster cars, then some of the glory would get reflected. Marketing is about creating a demand, sales is about fulfilling it.

Absolutely about marketing, and that's my point. There's a clearer link to more of the MB range than the other manufacturers in F1.

Which current Renault or Honda would you suggest as a pace car or medic? I can't think of one that really fits the bill, and wouldn't look ...well a bit daft.

Good point on the XF - looks too suspiciously like a Mondeo to me. Mondeo's are in fact very good cars, but they're mainly sub-£20k!

You are talking absolute nonsense. I can't believe the anti-XF comments on here. I bet none of the people making these stupid comments have driven one. It's a brilliant car. Given the choice of a Jaguar XF and a dowdy underpowered E220 CDI (4 cylinders and totally underpowered) I know what I'd have any day. I cannot believe they are similar prices and you don't get leather, bluetooth, sat nav, iPod integration as standard in the Merc. Get in the 21st century !

As for it looking like a Mondeo get your eyes tested.

But I wonder how many people realise it is a Mercedes or even look that closely

Obviously, as F1 is mainly watched by car enthusiasts of one type or another, I would hazard an educated guess and say "most".
You wouldnt watch the Ryder cup if you didnt like golf would you?

But that's my point. Why would it have to be a Renault Clio Turbo Nutter Cup SE? All it has to do is keep up an average 80mph, or whatever. The association with F1 would be sufficient to impress potential customers. Didn't Peugeot use a 407 Diesel as a pace car for something recently?

Mercedes don't send AMGs round the F1 track to sell more AMGs. They do it to sell more Mercedes, of all flavours. They cynically suppose that the man who then buys a C200 will do so, saying "It's just like that F1 pace car!"

As for how it would look; well that's a matter of opinion.

The SL55 is faster and more powerful (500 bhp as opposed to 400 bhp). The V8 Kompressor engine beats the ancient supercharged Jaguar V8 hands down.

For example, SL55 or XKR ? Same target market, different folks but neither could be considered to be the better of the two.

I think you may have come to an inaccurate conclusion. Its not a case of being anti-XF, or anti-Jaguar OR anti anything. It simply a case of expressing a realistic point of view. In my opinion, Jaguar will struggle to achieve good sales figures for the XF. I am basing my opinion on residual values of earlier models - which consistently are poor when compared to similar models from either Mercedes, Lexus or BMW. And residual values DO seriously affect new car sales for obvious reasons.
I am therefore forced to come to this conclusion - as obviously unpleasant as that may sound to you.
Until Jaguar do turn their image around and become desirable in the eyes of the many - not just the few - then they will remain an also-ran.

What did you think of the Jaguar XF when you drove it verytalldave ?

I have already stated earlier that I havent driven one. I have driven both an X and an S class Jaguars. And after the test drives bought my C200K.
See my earlier posts.

Just been for a drive in my mates new XF......very impressed...great interior and dives beautifully. Feels slightly firmer on the road than Jags of old and the diesel is again ultra smooth and whilst it may not be as powerful as BMW/Mercedes, it is a very refined engine with plenty of mid range pick up.

Car looked very smart in a dark grey metallic.

I for one wish Jaguar all the very best with this car ....its a very good car and deserves to do well.

Would I buy one having owned nothing but Mercs for the last 10 years?.....well, if I was in the market for a new car it would be a top contender as I don't do BMW's, and the interior of the Jag was nicer than the ageing W211 E Class and to me it drove just as well and the engine was a peach, but the 320CDi is also a belter of an engine.....all of this is hypothetical however, as years ago I vowed never to buy a new car again and now love the world of banger Mercs, whilst having something a little nicer tucked away in the garage.

You should be basing part of your opinion on the projected future residuals which are according to Glasses and others BETTER than the MB.

I am basing my opinions on prices of actual cars for sale. No "guides" for me, I prefer the real world.
Its all only opinion anyway and nothing to get into a twist over.
People will buy what they want regardless of magazine/TV reviews.
I dont know about you, but I have never ever read a review of a car and then gone out and bought one because of the review.
I buy what I see on the road and like the look of.

I tend to drive a car first than read all the stuff I can get my hands to double check. I'm also a bit wary of judging a car from photos taken by others because I know how important lighting and angles are being a freelance cameraman.
Acceptance over time is also important. When BMW launched the E60 5-series everyone including me was saying how ugly it was and it consequently would have slow sales. In fact after a slow start it has sold well and many of the interior and exterior Bangle designed features have been widely copied. For example heavily creased shoulder line, wrap around headlights, dash angled away from the driver and double binnacle display. To his credit Ian Cullum the ex-Aston Martin and XF designer ignored all that and chose a new route.
Cullum is highly influential, the likes of Lexus have copied him it's not the other way around.
