They did me a favour!

My car is over three years old and I like to have newer car. Nearly new Mercs are a bit overpriced (in my opinion) at the moment and I have always fancied the X-Type (cue shouts of "it's a Mondeo").

I went to the Leeds main dealer to have a look and was looking at a reasonably priced 54 plate X-Type in black. Very nice. After walking up and down a couple of times, I went back to the said black one and was inspecting it more closely. I then stood back back and looked around for a salesman to find out a bit more about said car. Just then a casually dressed bloke arrived and like me was looking at the X-Types. At that point a salesman walked straight past me and, announcing himself as Darren with outstretched hand marched up to the casually dressed guy to offer assistance. Perhaps I look cheap even though I wore a suit.

However, I was so annoyed by this that I walked away and won't go back there. So I suppose they have done me a favour.

Yeah thet did them X types are hunks of junk. XJ8 and XJR's though different story, proper Jags.

Yeah the XJ8's and XK8's are fantastic. Dad had an old XJ40 ages ago and loved it. Almost traded it for an X300 XJR but went for the W140 S Class. Almost bought the current XJ8 instead of the W220 but couldn't resist another Merc!

I actually really like the look of the X Type, looks like a mini XJ. Was seriously interested in one instead of the C320 we bought recently but the wife couldn't stand it!

Jaguar - cars for old men - wait until you're drawing a pension - in the mean time, be cool - drive a Mercedes-Benz.

I like the v6 X-Type with 4 wheel drive though, and the estate looks ok. If I could choose though it would be the proper Jag, XJ8.

To pinch a phrase off some Americans, you'd have to prise the S Class outa my cold dead hand first.

Hi Bugblatter,
Unfortunately I have paid perhaps too much attention to your opening remarks.

It has cheered me up that the ""Nearly new Mercs are a bit overpriced"" This surely means they are holding their price. Big drops to me are a bad sign for the long term future of whatever brand you decide to buy?

Good luck though with your decision,
John

I wouldnt say that, a "proper jag" is an old mans car.

Im talking a nice juicy xj8 or xjr or xjk whatever it is with the charger.

X type AWD look quite stylish but dont cut it im afraid. Espiecially (sp) the 2.5 v6, absoloutely gutless, and very very bad economy.

The 'old man' image applies just as much to Mercedes as it does to Jaguar. The type Rs are fantastic drivers cars.

Problem I found with the X-type (and most Jags for that matter) was the rear accomodation. I thought it was unacceptable in the X, and bearable in the S - and this is absed on the opinion of 4 and 10 year olds, not adults. I've got trashed knees and can't sit in either........

No such problem in the E, and I really enjoy being chauffered around in my mate's S on the odd visit to the local.

I looked at the S Class 2.7 Diesel at my local dealer (Chester) and they made no attempt to sell me the car. I *think* I look the part, and had £30K burning a hole in my pocket. The boots too small anyway. The place was dead, when all the other dealers in the area on my tour that day had been pretty busy.

Thinking of nearly-new Mercs, I eventually bought a 6mth old C270 Estate from MB Direct (Birmingham branch). They're almost too aggressive with the sales push, but that was such a relief after the Jag (and many other) negative experiences. There were some aspects of their methods that I wasn't happy with but I'm still pretty pleased with the price I got the car for (and with the car itself).

x type

Looked at the x type myself, commented on the lack of room for the driver,he retorted with, it has the largest boot in its class, pity, I don't drive from the boot, I said ....silence...i was enjoying myself up to that point, we kinda drifted apart in the showroom, and i slinked out the door

You are right. I have no doubt at all that a Merc is a better financial decision. Jags depreciate far quicker than Mercs.

For what it is worth, the "inside" info is that The Jag have come on lightyears under Ford ownership in terms of production quality - it is an injustice that their sales and reputation aren't moving at the same rate.

Land Rover however, and in particular Range Rover production is utter toss. But the image is high and they are selling as many as they can make.

Example - a supplier couldn't understand why there were so many warranty claims on their components on Range Rover engines - when they went to the production line, they found the workers lifting the engines about by their component rather than the proper hook!!!!!

Merc build quality is still poop at times too tho....

We got involved in doing some brand work with Jaguar - the aim was how to keep the brand perception and visibility intact when using standard parts and platforms from lower-value brands.

However, Ford didn't want to pay the money for a decent exercise (would have been into 7 figures on to of the advertising budget) so now everyone asumes that Jag=Ford.

So it's all your fault!! :D

Strange how some folks refer to the new Aston Martin as being a Jaguar, you would think they would cut out the 'middle-man' and simply also call the Aston Martin a Ford.

It does look though as Ford is doing a better job than Austin, Morris, Rover, Wolseley etc etc. All these were swallowed up by British Leyland who gradually went down a slippery slide into oblivion! Jaguar cars in my opinion are slowly restoring a reputation that was simply disappearing way over the horizon.

I suppose we look at some Chrysler vehicles as being 'cut-down' ;) versions of Mercedes-Benz?

Have a nice day,
John
A beautiful sunny morning in Torquay

Or vice versa, i.e. some people look on modern Mercedes as overpriced Chryslers!
