...........so what do I need to do to get to ride a motorbike for the very first time..................?????????

A crash helmet ....... ;)

Hehe, I was asking my buddies this the other day.

The first thing we came up with was a brain and self control.

If I had those, apparently with a few spare days and about £600 I could have my bike license.

its just you can get a Ducati for £1500 used....................

Anyone travelled this route recently?

My brother "travelled" this route and as a result now plays with a Triumph Daytona 997cc, 3 pot. If I remember correctly he paid £700 for the course and a fortune for the bike. If you wish I can contact him for details as he lives down your end of the country.

Knowing some of the speeds I have found it acceptable to travel at on 4 wheels in the UK, I know owning a rapidly accelerating bike would not be a good idea.

Downsides:

I miss out on perfectly good transport that costs peanuts
I miss out on getting to work in half the time.
I miss out on most of the bike chat at work.

Plus sides:

I don't look like a power ranger when I arrive at work
I dont have odd wing mirrors laying on my desk with stoies attached that are along the lines of "I don't remember anything between before the bend and hospital, but apparently this is all that's left"

OK, I admit it I am too sissy to ride a bike but would love too!

Hi R2,

You will need to do a CBT (Compulsory basic training) first. This will allow you to ride a moped, motorcycle or scooter as a learner. After the CBT you can do Direct Access on a 500cc bike which then allows you to ride any motorcycle without power restrictions. If you do it all in one go you will be able to jump on a 900cc after about 5 days :)

Typical cost is around £500 for CBT + DAS. I did mine in 1999 and bought the same Ducati in red. Heres a pic of my old bike (now sold):

Good luck in your decision. I think the reserve for that one will be around £3000-£3500.

Cheers,
Steve

I'm travelling the route, and thursday I have my CBT. For a CBT you need nothing more than a learner permit for a motorbike (which on my driving licence apparently was already included; just check on you paper counterpart for a A or A1 learner permit; if not, just ask the dvla- it free!)

Once you've done you're CBT you can ride up too 125cc with a L-plate. IF you complete your theory and practical, you cal drive a 125cc up too 33bhp. After two years, you can ride any bike.

Alternatively, if you are over 21; you can do a DAS (direct access) on a 500cc bike instead of your practical, and you can go straight to the bike of your dreams (insurance permitting)

Michele

p.s. I'm looking at a bike, second hand; but as I don't know jack of bikes, does anyone know a company that does checks on them? RAC style?

But please don't.

Todays 600cc sports bikes are good for 160mph+ and will be so totally alien to you if you are not used to it that you could well be dead in days.
Start off sensible and work your way up, I am sick of seeing the numbers of born again and weekend bikers currently trying very hard to kill themselves on our roads.
You take a mature grown up male who during the week drives his car carefully and courteously. You then put said male on a bike and he leaves his brain at home.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy speed and will ride my bike much faster than the weekend warriors in the course of my work but there are times and places. We seem to realise this when driving but forget all about it when on a bike.

And before I get flamed I know not all bikers are like this but a sizeable number are and they are getting the reasonable ones a bad name.

I have just got in from work and one of our jobs for today was to target speeding bikers as we have had so many serious incidents recently involving bikes.

Thanks for the comments guys! My wife has made some as well ! Seems me killing myself on a Ducati isnt a good idea.

.........anyone tried parachuting?

It would be a waste of a good bike..........

Is the wife's idea that you do it with or without the 'chute???

is this some sort of crash helmet fixation?

or what is more commonly referred to as a mid life crisis :)

Andy

Oh definately a mid life crisis!! I cant ride a motorbike, I cant surf, I cant fly a helicicopter and I have only driven at 151mph (on a track)..........

Welcome to the club....I sold my VFR800 in 2001 when we went off to America and when I mentioned getting another bike when we got back I was told in no uncertain terms that I wasn't allowed  :(

I started off on a scooter a couple of years ago and then did the licence and got a 600 in January.
Believe me, if you get on any sort of "proper motorbike" and try riding it without any prior experience or training, it will scare the living sh*t out of you very quickly.
Go and do the CBT on a scooter if you want to give it a go. It'll cost you about £100 and only takes a day.

Scary bikes

I've been riding bikes most my life and I still get scared.....I mean excited :D
I don't think you'll regret doing your bike test even if you only ride for a short while after, it is an experience I would recommend. I just wish part of the car driving test included a brief ride on a motorcycle if only to make the new driver aware of the hazards and vunerability of a motorcyclist.
