Hey all,

Probably doing it wrong way around but I just bought W212 E63, is anyone familiar with this particular car?

Just noticing few things that I'm not sure whether it is down to not knowing these engines or if they are real issues.

When at lights, stand still traffic I can notice the revs fluctuating a little, say around 50rpm or so.

Ran OBD diagnostic doesn't show any codes.

Also, when cold it seems to respond quite late and lurchy.

I'm coming from W205 C63 so this engine and platform is completely new to me.

^ Did somebody call:p

Yes I had one, a 64 plate Obsidian black one, remapped and I regret parting with it. Brilliant car.

The oddities you describe I found as well. I think its down to the engine being cold as I never noticed anything once up to temperature.
You may want to check if there is a software update for the transmission to cure the jerkiness when cold.
Are the revs stable when up to temperature?

Thanks for getting back so quick, I don't even know what paint code is mine 😂

i didn't pay too much attention to it when it's warm but from what I remember it becomes stable as it doesn't attract my eyes anymore 😅, if there is any movement in rpm I think its very little for me to see.

Might run a live data check on it so I can actually see the rpm figures and see what it does.

Opened to bonnet today after getting back from work whilst car is running, at its sounds bit odd to me. Than again, I might be picky here at the moment as it is new to me. Will try to get a video tomorrow, if it will allow me to upload here.

Did you have any issues or preventative maintenance you had to do?

Things to look out for? It's just over 50k miles, full MB history whatever good that does and I'll check with them regarding software thanks for mentioning it.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just completely new to this 😂

^ No problem. Any unfamiliar noises are worrying to a new owner.
Be assured the M157 engine in your car isn't the quietest engine on tick over.
It's normal, don't worry.

Mine was on 36k miles when I sold it in Sept 22. Check your car has had the transmission oil changed. It should have been done at 31k miles or 3 years old.
Mine was on a service plan so everything was done on schedule but you can check what needs doing to your car next service using this website.
Any questions or concerns, just shout out.

Edit.
The paint code is on the sticker inside the drivers door jamb. Its Obsidian Black.
Stick your full 17 digit Vin# into this site and you can see what was fitted at build time.

Oh are they, my brother in law had w204 c63 and that engine was definitely quieter from what I remember.

Will look into the transmission oil change has been done or not, if not guess that's next on my list to do.

Thanks for the reassurance and recommendation, I'll report back in a week or so with how's it getting on 😊😊

I forgot to answer a couple of your questions.

No issues at all during my 3 year ownership. I had it two months and decided it wasn't quick enough;)
MSL in Birmingham remapped it, removed the resonator for some extra noise and turned what was a very quick car into an animal.
As long as you keep on top of the servicing you should have a car that lasts for years.
Things to look out for.
Be wary of any misfires. Probably a coil pack or bad plug, but the weak part of this engine is bent conrodso_O
As I say, I had zero issues with both stock and remapped engine but I know of 3x engines that have imploded. Its an expensive fix too.
But don't be put off. There are thousand of satisfied owners with no problems. You only hear of the ones with problems on forums usually.
Oh, the noise you hear on tick over is I believe the oil pump. It's normal.
Compared to non AMG engines, they seem to be noisier in my experience (1xE55, 1xE63)

Ah yeah, I'm familiar with MSL they did servicing for my previous C63.

That's good to hear that these are the type to last if taken care of, my plan is service every 5/6k miles. Don't mind the power at this point but only had it for 4 days or so, so that might change.

With the noise it could be me overreacting, so I'll just keep an open mind but an cautious eye on it 😂

If you are concerned with any noise, get it checked for peace of mind.
Its probably nothing sinister but an experienced ear should tell you.

Nice looking car. 👍

+1 for the above I was looking at these but went with the C63 W205 after the w204 c63 so its an engine i havent had yet but might look into them again when the F-type goes or maybe a W204 507
Enjoy it 🙂

Thank you, I will keep an eye on it and if anything might take it to AMG specialist near me when I find one. Or take it down to MSL for a health check at some point.

I'm definitely glad I joined the mbclub 😌

Ah the W205 C63, I loved mine, still regret selling it 😢

Beautiful car! I love the front end on this E classes.
I have the same engine and the revs shouldn't drop even when the engine is cold. Maybe it's something simple like a vacuum leak from one of the small pipes?
As for the noise, they are a bit noisy compare to some other Mercedes engines but it's normal.

Enjoy it :)

Thanks :), it was definitely on my list as one of the cars I wanted.

The revs drop just slightly but I can still see it, haven't tried having it in sport mode to see if it does the same or not.
But I think I'll have it checked over by AMG specialist when I get some free time just to get understanding of the car.

Congratulations 🎊 👏

I have one and I love it but also love my m156. They are two different animals. I decribe the m156 as a bit of a hammer. On the m156, it's all about wear and tear to the top end. Minimal catastrophic failure as long as problems addressed.

On the otherhand, the m157 equally has its own design flaw, being the conrod, which can be catastrophic and expensive to put right. Take care not to push it to the limits and keep within safe parameters. If you take care of it, it will take care of you 🙂

I was actually torn between w204 c63 which was really nice black with brown interior but ended up getting w212 e63 due to brother in law having w204.

Oh I'll definitely be careful with it and ensure it's always kept on top of any maintenance and warm up procedure. I'll be keeping it stock as missus is driving it as well.

Which one you tend to go for as a favorite?
