Hi all,
ive been having problems with my 2004 e320 cdi estate,
first off the keys wont turn in the ignition switch, including spare,
2 faults show on the dash which were not there before, esp and srs
second problem is a dull high pitched noise coming from behind the engine on the passenger side when the engine is off and the car locked.
spoke to a guy at merc, told me to remove the eis and warm it up with a hair dryer because of the cold weather just to narrow the search down for defective items, thats when the third problem became apparent, on removing the eis switch closed the car door and the dash is still on , looks like a christmas tree! is this normal?
any help would greatly appreciated

Main Battery dying? Can you get the boot open and either charge the battery (off car) or have access to a jump pack?

battery checks out ok, charged it up over night just to be sure, forgot to add this in first post, thanks for your reply

Absolutely sure it's holding it's charge? Definitely the time of year for seemingly 'good' batteries to suddenly die.

Obviously don't try and jump start from another car but no harm in taking charge from another vehicle with a known good battery to 'assist' your battery. Don't try to start the car but this may enable you to turn the ignition on.

When you say 'eis', what are you referring to?

eis stands for the electronic ignition switch, the part where you put the key

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying!

I would imagine the 'high pitched' noise would be either the fuel pump or SBC pump. I take it that this only happens for a few seconds?

no the noise is perminant when the car is locked

Righty, this is a head scratcher! I still suspect the battery but am hoping others may have some idea!

Although the battery may have charged, one cell could be defective (I had this problem a couple of weeks back) and had the following problems - ESP/ABS/BAS warnings on dash, clock constantly winding itself forward, unable to open boot electronically, horrible 'moany' noises under the bonnet!

Called RAC who 'assisted' the battery for 10 minutes before we eventually got the car started with the aid of a jump pack.

Battery only read 10.5V - dead cell. Once car started, all errors cleared and new battery has been 100% ever since!

Could possible be a faulty ignition switch but I don't know enough about them to say that it is this.

quick update, tried a new battery on the car today from my is300, no difference, merc battery puts 12.4 volts over multi meter, so not the battery mate
can still hear the high pitched noise from passenger side wheel well, behind the engine, sounds like something is energized that isnt supposed to be.

OK, well that's a start! Suspect you really need to get it into an expert to diagnose properly.

The problem is, there are so many electronics and gizmo's on these cars it can be hard to diagnose with some 'assistance'
