Intresting incident today,

55 plate CLK with keyless entry/drive system (soz dont know the MB offical wording for it). Pasenger had the 'key' card and left the vehilce whilst the engine was still running and did not return.

The driver was then able to drive for 8 miles or so without the 'key', she admits 'some' warning lights came up on the dash, then in lane 3 of 3 of a Mway lost all power and came to a halt (you know how foggy it was today!)

Is this normal??

You help would be appreciated on this.

Sounds like a good way to stop carjacking... lets the scumbags get away far enough not to hurt you, yet not so far that the cops can't catch them!

Spooky and dangerous all the same.

What happens if Mummy/Daddy/Driver get out of the car with the engine running and junior decides to take over. As my grandson would love to do.

Thats the keyless go system(you get a card & the start button is on the gearknob)not sure why the car was allowed to be driven as far as 8 miles after the passenger had left with the keycard though(suppose the cars anti theft device recognised that the car was being driven without the keycard being present hence the engine cutting out-not what you want in the fog & in lane 3 of a motorway though!).Someone with keyless go will verify why this situation happened soon i'm sure:crazy:

Hope so, all the potentail for a bad one was there, cant be working right??

Ive heard of this before , the car will run without the key being present . But the situation before was when coming to a hault at the toll booth at the fourth road bridge.

I was under the impression it would shut down when it was safe to do so , I.E. when the car stops next .seems dangerous that it would just shut down at motorway speeds , did the traffic stop?

It was stop start traffic flow so your post clears up why it stopped, but 8 miles without a key??

The key card was with the passenger who was in line for flight up the road, a unit collected the card and returned it to the vey happy driver who then continued on.

Safest option than leave motorist stranded on the HS in fog.

Adviced given to see MB.

I remember having a Triumph Herald with the renowned-ly secure FS key for the ignition : you could start the car then remove the key without turning it off - car would then run indefinitely .

Well it had the key when it started. Not knowing the complete ins and outs of it , its got to be how often it checks to make sure the key is still in the car.

If it did it all the time , the batteries would be shot pretty quickly. Might just for instance check for the key every 10 mins or so. Im sure the dash would have some sort of warning long before it went off.

Below is an extract from the W212 owners manual on keyless go , the screen would have been red and flashing with an audible warning too.

Cheers Fuzzer, you chaps never leave a question half answered.

What can I say except, WOW, they WANT it to happen.

Very suprised!

Didn't Top Gear do a prank on this with the Hamsters American Camaro?

He is sat in a cafe nr his car, without the key they get in it and drive it off, however it cuts power when out of range....

For the reasons of getting car jacked etc id prefer the car kept running. Its not like it doesnt warn you over and over again that the key isnt there.

100% down to the drivers error!

The car did not help. We had an Espace with keyless ignition. If you got out with the key in your pocket the car most definitely let you know. Loud beeping, and message on screen. There is no way you would drive away or even watch your passenger walk away.

So I need a third option - MB need to learn from Renault's implementation!
