Anyone tell me any horror stories / good points about this car (the new shape Landy) as I think I am about to buy one, unless the general consensus is "Run, run for your life" ?

Cheers

I've heard the build quality is a bad as its always been unfortunately.

I have a colleague whose brother in-law makes a tidy living out putting right many faults with these.

good points - it goes anywhere just about.

I drove one in france over xmas and was very impressed with the handling on snow and tarmac.
No body roll as was the case of the previous discos.
Great visibility and plenty of room for 4 of us with ski equipment.
The interior looks well but I cannot see it lasting a long time due to small sections of plastic panels everywhere.
Fuel consumption was a little bit high, however it was fully loaded going up snow covered mountain roads.
The zenon headlights are pretty cool providing a sharp crisp beam.
All in all a good vehicle bar the reliability issue already mentioned.
Have you tested a Shogun yet? more car for your money and reliability fantastic.
I had one for about 3 years and it was a joy to own and drive with no isuues whatsoever.
I am sure you have had a look at the landrover forums for feedback there too.
Goodluck

I jettisoned my brand new Landrover Defender, Top of the Range, after 2 years as a heap of doggy do. Never will I buy another of what ever type, as they are over priced, over rated and decidedly not very well built - be wary is my advice.

i love the car, looks like a mars / lunar vehicle

if your head is buying go japanese i'd say

if you heart is buying, then up to you!

My kids got a Lego police truck that is a dead-ringer for a new Disco. It even breaks regularly (ha ha).

Not sure if this speaks volumes for Lego designers, or says what a basic design the new Disco is.

First question: do ye really need/want a big 4X4? Should point out that as a former Defender sufferer and now a Land Cruiser owner that is not a 4x4 bashing question but a real one.

They are not really suited for being urban runabouts: if you have Auto, Air Suspension etc then the Kerb weight is 2,700kg: 2.65 tons in old money and they are tall.

Also you may want to wait to see the joys that Gordon Brown has in store for the budget before deciding. Many sense some cynical moves afoot to disguise more stealth taxes as eco-friendly policies and big diesels may get a hammering as a part of that.

However, the new Disco has the potential to be very good indeed and hopefully build quality has improved. But got to say that all that electronic trickery has at least the potential for misery especially as a number of Land Rover dealers were, in my experience, not very good even on basic nuts & bolts stuff.

So the What Car summary "Fingers crossed over reliabilty" is quite apt.

We currently have 3 cars. Before the wedding I had a Ford Explorer which I used for running the dog around in and an SLK for playing with, wifey has an MG.

I chopped the Explorer in and got a diesel Peugeot 406 estate for running the dog around in because it did better than 17MPG, but from the moment I have had it I have hated it - nothing wrong with it but I hate it.

I prefer the ride in a 4x4 and if we are to start a family then we can use it as the kids/dog/family/tip/truck mobile and we get to keep the SLK as a toy.

Whatever Gordon Brown wants to do to me for owning a 4x4 surely can't be as bad as the costs I would save by getting rid of the third car :

Tax - £165 saving
Insurance - £500 saving
MOT/Servicing - £250 saving
Total = £915 per annum

So choices are :

Toyota Land Cruiser - LC5 - seems OK, can't really get too excited about them but it would be ultra reliable
Mitsubishi Shogun - never really liked them but understand that it would be ultra reliable
VW Toureg - like these loads, but from the what car comparisons the Disco beats it on most of the points I am interested in - again they are ultra reliable.
Landrover Disco - like the looks, can afford a decent spec (buying 2nd hand but would have at least 1-2 years of manu warranty left) am concerned about reliability and the durability of the interior, if I can get over the last points, then the decision become more head lead than heart.

Ravs and Xtrails don't count and I cannot get a BMW or Porsche as I have slagged them off in the past.

Plus the depreciation, which would be more than £915 per year!

New ML :)

Volvo, no thanks reliability is worse than the LR !
ML - out of my budget and all I ever hear is how bad they are ?
Murano - not really big enough - more the Xtrail/Rav4 size

You need to drive one and decide if you can live with the suspension. Diesel engine aside, this is sold in the US as the Lexus GX470 and has a ride to match. It has fancy adjustable suspension but even on the hardest setting wallows.

I ended up with an LC3 because I needed nothing more than a basic 4x4 and that comes with real springs & shocks that can be easily uprated. Also has real difflocks rather than brake trickery.

And no, they are not exciting and the engine character is best described as "robust". But they work!

I'm probably wrong but I thought it was the same size as the ML. It has a nice engine too!

Not much difference from overall body dimensions, but about 100 litres difference in boot space from the Muran to the ML and the Disco - plus they only do a petrol engine :(

The new ML is getting rave reviews where have you heard they are bad?

If resale value is important, steer clear of Japanese and stick with German. How about an X5?
