Hi all,

C180 W203 (2002)

My Gearbox is still leaking, have had the electrical connector seal replaced and a new Gearbox Radiator.

It now looks like the sump is leaking slightly....my garage thinks that the gearbox maybe over pressurising and will need a new ECU.

Does this sound correct

No it does not sound right, and never heard of that one

not sure how the ECU will help in this case or for that matter how the box could pressurize very much apart from normal air and fluid expansion - can you pull the little red cover off the gearbox dip stick and see if there is evidence of this pressurization ?

The Garage think that is why I have had so many leaks.....

Can someone clarify if the gearbox pressurises...it must pressurise as the gearbox is hydraulic..that is why if the oil is low it malfunctions..

I need some answers before monday when I ring the garage to discuss

The only main presurised part is in the torque converter, the sump is not

No, it doesn't sound correct to me.......I very much doubt that there is any excessive build up of pressure within the gearbox as there is a 'vent' valve located at the very top of the tranny casing.

More likely is that the rubber sump gasket needs renewing (about £6) ......did the garage previously remove the sump and then re-use the original gasket?......heat and age would have caused the old gasket to have lost its suppleness and not seal as efficiently once its been disturbed.

The Sump was said to be "damp " at the last service....

But the electrical connector seal was replaced plus the Gearbox radiator when taken to the garage for the original leak a month ago, it has been into the garage since.

And now it is still leaking...the garage says thay can cure it by replacing the ECU which is overpressurising the system...

I think the Sump Gasket needs replacing

I will hold off calling you as can't get to you this week and don't want to waste your time.

Thanks Again

Ok no worries. I could have done it for you this afternoon as I have a gasket here.

Can still do it if you need me to today. I am staying late to do paperwork :(

C180 W203...2002

Had gearbox inspected by my local garage in Gosport. (They are quire reliable)

They have replaced the electrical connector seal which was leaking..(the original garage did this).. but didn't have a gearbox dip stick, so have filled the gearbox to what they believe is the correct amount...but need to take it to Merc for a level check.

The car has done 6 miles and I have oil dripping onto the exhaust at the rear of gearbox.....Can it be that hard to fix a leaking gearbox.

Could this be a sign that the gearbox has been over filled, I belive there is a pressure releif valve in the gearbox which if over filled would leak the excess oil.

It is going back tomorrow to get checked

I now have no confidence in my car...

Bring it down to me.

I have a dipstick and can advise you what to do and on your leaks. The level must not be guessed EVER. It may damage your gearbox if driven an dthe level is too low.

If the level is too high it will blow it out the breather.

It is going to my local garage to doule check it is over filled as I have paid them for the work

I think this may be the case. I drove 3 miles to the Gym, car was fine.

Drove 3 miles home plus a stop at the garage. got home smoke coming of the exhaust (below transmission)and could see oil dripping...

The garage can check it quickly as don't want to drive to portsmouth with my car smoking...

I will contact you to get a proper reading later on in the week....wednesday afternoon if all is well.

I must order myself a gearbox dipstick.

If it overflows out of the breather, it won't cause any damage will it, just a bit of a mess...What is the best way to get the level down again

Will do..
