W124 300CE CARAT DUCHATELET
Hi guys. I recently bought a 1988 w124 300ce. It was running fine but now won’t start. I love the car but have no idea about any sort of mechanical work. I’ve tried a couple of garages but they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Please could somebody recommend a garage around Leicester or around the midlands.
Also what size battery should this car have? It’s got one in there but I’m 99% sure it’s not the right one.
Many thanks Sunny

Mercland in Nuneaton highly recommended

Hi Sunny,
When you say you have tried a few garages, have you taken the car to them ?. as you say it won’t start.

I would always check the battery first, when you turn the key does anything happen, do the lights work, does anything click on ?? when the key is turned.

Thanks guys. I’ll give mercland a try.

Yes I’ve had it taken to a couple garages one was silver star in rothley.

What battery should it have?

If you put your VIN number into 7Zap and navigate to the battery page, it will give you the Merc battery number. Use this to identify a replacement.

I’ll give that a go. Thanks

Why not ask if someone can help you get this car up and running ? First i would check if its got a spark by pulling the plug lead off ,,and push in an old spark plug,, then get someone to crank it over as you put the lead with a plug in the end of it close to the block of the engine do make sure you hold it with insulated pliers or you will find yourself with a pair of angels wings ha ha .,,you will see it spark if all is fine . Then its a check for fuel . Spin it over a few times then pull a plug see if its wet with fuel.

If it cranks but does not fire, it's not a battery. Could be a whole host of other issues
Crank Position Sensor, EZL, Fuel pump relay, poor battery connection to the fuel pump (that little wire with the o-ring connector), stuck fd piston and many others.
Surprised that no mechanic can been able to go down the diagnostic path.

I had one that did exactly that and it turned out to be a distributor cap.

Best thing to do first is to find out if fuel is in the cylinders and if there is a spark . This is the main 2 items needed to help start the engine ...Then we will go from there .

It’s recently had 2 new fuel pumps, new spark plugs and a full service. The garages I’ve tried have said they think it’s the ignition module but they’re not sure. The parts £950 new so don’t really want to spend that if somebody isn’t sure. I’ve tried a couple of second hands ones off eBay but still no luck.

What engine do you have in your W124 ? M103 m104 Also these parts will be expensive so i would go second hand .Check out as post above said the CPS . And depending on the engine you can hard wire the fuel pump relay to get fuel in to the fuel distributor to prove if its faulty . This might be a waste of time ,,but go and check the fuses .

Not got a clue what engine it is sorry. It’s a 3 litre straight 6 with a 4 speed auto gearbox if that’s any help. I’ve checked all the fuses and there ok but apart from that I have no idea on how to work on cars.

These things eat distributor caps. Almost worth changing them at each service. If its turning over but not firing then this could certainly be the issue. Can you hear the fuel pump when the ignition is turned before trying to crank it? They are fussy about the quality of distributor caps so make sure you have an OEM brand or MB original.

I’ll change it as good practise anyway but the last person that looked at the car said there is power going into the ignition module but nothing coming out
