Lost service book

Took my 1996 SL 350 for an MOT and service yesterday 36,000miles, apart from wrong mileage on the mot the MB main dealer lost the service book. I know I handed it over with the old mot to the service reception.
Seems the book never made it to the mechanic/technician.

What redress do I have?

After all they tell us a car with a MB FSH is worth more, so what value may the car have lost.

I thought of suggesting the small claims court for the difference in values!

Any thoughts?

Thank you,

S88

The main dealer can get you a replacement servicebook then fill out the service details based on their database.

The book will likely have REPLACEMENT stamped on every page but this is easily explained and I think potential customers, should you wish to sell would understand.

The most important part to have is the schedules, invoices and receipts for the services rather than the ticks and stamps in the little book IMHO.

Many thanks for the quick reply.
So this will prove how good the data base is?

Still think I should push them for a few quid:)

The database won't go back to 1996...

Realisticly, as said if you have all the invoices then the book itself won't make much difference (expect perhaps in case of a Classic where the original service book adds value in the same way that an original tool kit does).

In order to successfully sue you will need to be able to demonstrate actual financial damage - i.e. if you can find autotrader ads for similar cars with and withouth FSH and show the difference in asking price, or a document form a recognised industry expert detailing the actual amount lost in value.

Having said that... I would have found it very irritating if it happened to me.

The service book for my previous clk320cab was lost during a house move by the previous keeper, mb dartford provided another (with a comprehensive printout of all work carried out on the car from day 1)which had duplicate in perforation on every page.

Aha... 2006, not 1996, no problem then. :D
