According to the on board computer around 21mpg in inner city London what the heck? The temperature sits above 80c so thermostat should be ok is this normal for the cls?

Depends how you drive, but you have to remember that it's a large heavy car so you can't compare it to smaller diesel cars. Its going to be alot thirstier. On open roads, I find the economy very good, even when averaging 3 figure speeds.
Fitting the Brabus D6 not only gave us more power, it also gave us better fuel consumption.
(worst diesel mpg I've ever seen was on a V10 Toureg - it dropped to single figures according the computer- don't know how accurate it was)

You buy an 1800kg car with an automatic gearbox, drive it in stop start traffic and expect better than 21mpg.

Take it for a good long drive on quality fuel... London is a killer for economy.. My s class would do 40 mpg on long runs without issue even on 20's. In London I would see 17-18mpg....

If it's any consolation the mpg on my 350CGI petrol hadn't been great either in comparison to my previous CLK320. Giant wide tyres and a couple of hundred extra kg probably don't help, but even so I expected a bit better.

A 50 mile motorway run last week, albeit at relatively high speed without driving for economy saw an indicated 27mpg whereas similar in the CLK would probably have been around 32mpg.

That said this week I went for a 15 mile blast around the local empty dual carriageways one evening to get a feel for the acceleration/power etc. I was really hoofing it along the whole time and kind of expecting low-mid teens on the economy but saw an indicated 21.5mpg!

^ Think yourself lucky you didn't go for a petrol cls,my 500 averages 21mpg but i've seen as low as 12mpg around town!

How is the device, does it make it too aggressive on acceleration--im quite tempted

Ha !I am the king of **** Mpg with 20 yr average of 22.5mpg from average of 99bhp.
12mpg around town? my mondeo 2.0auto with a/c o did that!.V12 guzzling from only 4 cylinders
BUT the OP's figures ARE rather poor- you don't have to look to hard to find owners of Large heavy executive Petrol V6/V8 posting similar figures or better in urban driving

21mpg is really good for urban driving.

Really? My 525 Diesel Auto does 31-and-a-bit round town. I was a bit cheesed off with that till a friend pointed out his Renault Scenic did the same

Any six-cylinder engine is likely to use ~50% more fuel than a four in town. It's not really mpg so much as gallons per hour

Driving round Brighton isn't like driving in London. You actually go faster than pedestrians in Brighton.

Pulling away from rest is a huge fuel user. You do a lot of that in London.

I agree with you - i've see many a big heavy car with big engine posting good
town mpg- CLS in London sould be doing minimum 25mpg
Afaik 21mpg town is worst i have seen for any Diesel Merc.

I guess we don't know how bad the traffic conditions were though. I used to drive from London Bridge over to docklands in rush hour a few times a year when I lived in London and the journey time was often hideous - sometimes 90mins or more to do 3.5 miles. I don't remember checking my mpg but wouldn't expect great things really in any car.

I had my old E220cdi down to 17mpg in Glasgow xmas traffic and I frequently get my E320cdi into the teens driving around Glasgows west end...

I got to 40mpg over 38-52 miles driving at 60mph who the hell drives like that so boring
