Luton Airport car park fire

Out of curiosity, did anyone ever actually manage to receive anything other than the BBC's broadcasts from Alexandera Palace? :D

Viking, Forties, German Bight ?
In my head they're still "Viking Bank," "Long Forties" and Heligoland

But why is Dogger full of Geordies?

Huh? No issues in getting Short and Long wave broadcasts from Eastern and Southern Europe

But Medium Wave? Always dominated by BBC and rubbish broadcast quality - to this day.

My youth was spent trying to get a good crackle free signal from pirate radio Caroline. I don't remember it ever appearing on those radio dials though. ;) Never mind the reception quality, it had that feeling of being an illicit activity and what else did teenagers crave in the 60's.

One that I think did feature on the dial was radio Luxembourg. Another hard to receive foreign station which was considered shady by the grown ups.

Ahh... Luxembourg 208 and Emperor Rosko.

Gone but not forgotten.

I was surprised to read recently that Emperor Rosko is still around......80 years old and still broadcasting........ for "United DJs" DAB and online radio station.

Pye are no longer with us, though... that's the wireless my parents had when I was a child.

They still exist....but in 2022 it appears that the Pye brand was purchased by broadcast audio manufacturer Alice Ltd.

Remember the Dansette recorder players, We had one in 1964 and I can even remember the first record we bought, it was Roy Orbison's Pretty Women. A few years later when we progressed to something better I pulled the Dansette to bits (as you do) to see how it worked. They were very simple. Because the crystal pickup produced a relatively high output of a couple of hundred mVolts the amplifier comprised of only a single stage using one valve which was an EL84. They were used in radios too. Funny the details you remember 60 years later. The same EL84 valve is still available today and used by people who are into valve HiFi amplifiers.

Another common one for a simple record player was a single ECL82 triode-pentode, with the triode phase providing the initial gain, and the pentode as the output stage. As you say, odd the things you remember decades later!

So is Pete Murray, 98.

It says he was broadcasting on Boom Radio on Boxing Day 2022, alongside Diddy David Hamilton who's just 85.

I seem to recall Murray had a Pagoda SL at one time, regd. PM 208, or similar.

And now we have "Klarna," Europe's biggest Fintech until recently.
Valued at $6 billion, yet lost a billion last year. Hoping to float soon for $10 billion.

Just a click as you buy something online, and they've got you.....
Isn’t that just the equivalent of the Littlewoods or Grattan catalogue for the Internet generation?

Oh my, the worlds longest thread highjack.
Does anyone remember that car park fire at Luton airport?

This did not happen in Luton and it is not a Diesel JLR car ...just so you know.

But this thread is so far off track now it hardly matters :p
