About 02.30 Sunday morning I was driving South on the M1 through the dreaded 40mph average speed limit section. Boring, apart from wondering how many NIP's a twerp in the Toyota Avensis who did not slow at all would get.

Then noted a long, long string of lights on the other carriageway moving very slowly indeed or stationary. It was this:

Saturday/Sunday 3/4 February

M1 J8 to J10 northbound - single lane running in contraflow lane
During the above closure the following slip roads will be closed:

M1 J9 northbound exit slip - diversion via M1 J11
M1 J9 northbound entry slip - diversion via M1 J8
M1 J10 northbound exit slip - diversion via M1 J11
M1 J10 northbound entry slip - diversion via M1 J8

Might have been a shunt involved but reckon I drove past at least 4 miles of misery. Which must be a real ******* to find yourself stuck in at that time of the morning

I drove up that stretch last night too at about 22.00, horrendous queues resulting from a Coach smashing into the back of an Articulated lorry.

It was pretty fogy last night & freezing cold. Feel sorry for all those on the coach who where waiting behind the temporary barriers.

Even more sorry for anyone that needed the ambulance & paramedic that were finiding it extremely difficult to get through due to the lack of a hard shoulder.

The accident was in lane one and caused quite a lot of disruption, I dread to think of the chaos that would be caused by a major smash in the single contraflow lane.

Think yourself lucky that you dont have to go south there on a weekday morning. I join at J10 (luckily heading north) and even at 6 in the morning there are normally three lanes of standing traffic sometimes reaching J11. Leave it until 6.30 and you have to queue from the top of the south bound slip road. It was no better before the road works, just hope that the widening eases things once its finished.

There's a 50 mph average section on the M3, around the M25 junction. Bloke in a Lexus flew through it today (we were doing a steady 50) ... saw him slam on his brakes up ahead when he saw the yellow gantry with the 'exit' cameras on
