MB SL55 AMG (with '030' Package). C180 Bluefficiency SE Executive auto estate.
The discs on my SL55 are on the minimum limit after 37500 miles and I was quoted a total of £2563.01 for new OE MB discs and pads all round fitted by my local MB specialist. The quote was given me at the service last year with the advice (36750 miles) that I would get away with another 1000 miles at the most. I had planned to get the work done at this years service and booked it in today to confirm the work to be done. This afternoon I got a revised estimate of £2044.59 with the lower price mostly attributed to the fall in price of the front discs. My front discs are the composite type and have dropped from £882.00 to £617.70 which the dealer has suggested may be partly down to drop in the value of the Euro. A long winded way of suggesting that any other owners that need their composite brakes renewing may find that it's a good time to do it.

when you get the composite disc, could you weigh it please?

Am very curious about how much lighter it is than standard steel discs.

I assume your SL55 has the 8 pot calipers on the front?

just checked mine for the C63. was £2000 for front pads and disks, now £422 from MB. Surely cant be that cheap

Cost of front brake pads.

how much are the front pads?

Front pads are £208 +VAT. £249.60

The composite discs were standard with the F1 Performance pack, and I'm not certain whether the calipers are six or eight pot.

The disc centres are alloy which must be lighter but I don't know how much the one piece units weigh. I'll weigh mine when I get them and get back to you.

Replacing brake pads & discs.

Wishing i was close to you all , as i could make a little cash . Purchase all the parts and do it yourself . Not that hard.

The job is well within the capability of the most amateur mechanic but how would you deactivate and then reactivate the SBC Brake System?
The OE parts come to £1709.18 and the trip to the local MB garage to get the SBC reset would add another chunk to the bill, which leaves a couple of hundred quid for your labour and profit. There's not a lot of fat in the system or corners to be cut if the job's done properly.
I understand your philosophy and I did look at the possibility of doing the mechanical work myself but the savings aren't worth it if you can't do the whole job yourself.
I'm just grateful that the car isn't fitted with ceramic brakes.

pads price is not bad, considering that you need 8 pads!

My indie says the calipers for PP cars are the same as standard cars, just discs and pads different.

Would be really grateful for the weight for a front disc .. I am considering changing my CLS55's front brakes (same as SL55) to PP brakes to reduce unsprung weight and to improve braking performance.

Thanks.

I've just had a phone-call from my MB indie to tell me that my composite discs have arrived from MB in Germany, and that the units excluding the stretch bolts' weigh in at 13.6 Kg per side.
Hope this is what you're after

Thanks for that, I'll look at the system tomorrow so that the video makes more sense.
On another note, do you by any chance know a Lotus 'dealer' in the New Forest ?

Derek.

Closest official Lotus dealer is in D1ck Lovett in Swindon Wilts.
